First time. Left abusive marriage with 2 kids. After about 3 months, I filed. There were no assest, just CS. He signed. waited the mandatory 3 months, 2 weeks before the divorce was final, he committed suicide.

This time. He abandoned me oct. 2007, he filed April 2008, I had 30 days to respond then it was the papers back and forth with the disclosures, interrogatories, admissions and productions. This listing all, assests, debts, bank accounts, income, investment, etc. etc. Whats yours, his and ours. Oct. 1 went to mediation and reached an agreement. Oct 31, letter stating he changed his mind about mediation. Court to inforce mediation. Wait wait. contact att. another court date June 1, 2009 to enforce the enforcement. Nothing. July, back to the att. with WTF. Draw up finial MDA, had to go back 3 times to get my attorney to word papers correctly. Dosent sign. Now waiting on 3rd court date to enforce the enforcement of the enforcement of the mediation agreement and finialize the divorce. I figure I might get another court date by Sept. the judge hopefully with order the house auctioned, and the quit claim deeds signed. Maybe by christmas Ill be divorced. Yeah.

This is a good question and one I've been wondering about myself. My husband came out gay 3 days after xmas and moved out Valentine's day. I kept the 2 teenage girls of course, but all of our assets were very simple--2 paid for used cars and a savings acct. We live in a rental house. No debt. So we split the savings acct down the middle and each kept a car. When I get a better job I'll file I think, and hope that it goes quickly. Anyone see a need for me to get a lawyer? So far his money has been our money, so I have no complaints there and there are no fights, and that's why I've not been in a hurry to file, but now the need is growing in me to get out from under this sham of a marriage.

If you can work out acceptable child support and visitation and you are both agreeable, you can file the paper work yourself and save some money. Do a search for resources available in your state.
