Can your costs be reduced with little change in your quality of life
how does this effect your relationship with your partner if at all?

It caused a lot of change in my life to which I had to adjust but now I don't even miss what I had to cut out or back. You'd be surprised what you can do without. Living beyond your means has become the American way.

Might I suggest you both make a list of expenses and see how close you come then go through each and agree on what and where to cut. Do it together

I'm not married anymore but when I was, he was very compliant--in reducing or eliminating the things I wanted. It made his expensive toys more affordable--boat, $35k truck....

Working together has two benefits:

1) You are both achieving something together
2) It takes a LOT of stress out of the relationship. Honestly, people have no idea how much money they throw away on a daily basis. Example? That daily Starbucks latté at $4.00 a pop to start your work day. $4.00 x 200 working days in a year = $800 dollars. However, after taxes, you really had to earn $1,600 to pay for your daily fix. Is that latté really worth $8 to you?

Don't even get me started. We'd be set for life if I could have gotten my husband on board on cost reduction 30 years ago. I've come to the conclusion that whatever we make, he will spend. Although now that he's older, thinking about retirement and realizing we don't have enough in the bank for him to retire, NOW he wants to control MY spending .

Remember the cobblers children who have no shoes? Well, my husband has an MBA. He thinks budgets are for people who don't make enough money. I keep hoping but he hasn't changed in 30 years. I don't think he's going to.

One does NOT have to drive a new/newer car with monthly payments.

One does NOT have to have the best clothing.

One does NOT have to show off with pricey things.

One does NOT have to live in a "McMansion".

One does NOT have to eat out.

And being this is the relationship forum I'll also say that one does not have to go out on pricey dates in fact do things that cost next to nothing on such dates. Who cares if one calls the other "cheap".

Etc...,Etc....,Etc.....,
