I personally would have no problem if my SO had a lot of debt. Even if it was credit card debt, I can be understanding. A lot kids right out of high school get their first credit card and run rampant with it, which usually snowballs into a bigger mess involving more credit cards, loans, etc. Being irresponsible in your past vs. being currently irresponsible are two very different things. If someone isn't currently living within their means, that would be the only dealbreaker I would have when it comes to finances.
I myself have quite a bit of debt, but it's all for good reason. I have a mortgage, one car payment (the other is paid off), student loans, etc. I live within my means, have a healthy savings account, and an excellent credit score and report. If someone were to reject me for the amount of debt I have, that would be incredibly naive.
I'd date her. A date isn't a commitment. If I was serious about marrying her, I would want to know she had paid off a significant percentage of her debt.
She had $80,000 in private school loans to pay off. Would you keep dating somebody knowing they had this kind of debt?
Dude - Cut the woman some slack, she is young and just graduated from a private university. I know her story; she's 23, most likely she has just gotten her MSW (i do not know any social workers without a masters, it's almost given) and has just started to work in the industry. She simply needs time to develop her career. Who doesn't at 23. I've dated a few established social workers and they all made decent salaries. An ex made over $65K with her MSW, and is still climbing the ladder; I wouldnt knock social worker salaries.
Then you dog her because she bought a house??? One way or another she's going to be paying for a roof over her head, why not invest in equity.
I wouldnt hold school debt or equity against anyone. I feel your being a little hyper-critical of her. I wouldnt sweat it.
Sounds like she's taking on a debt load that I personally wouldn't. I don't seek loans...because I do not want to be in debt. Not even as little as $5.

Did you pay cash for your house??
