Man, that is not what he/she meant at all and it's not like you posted any detail regarding your specific issue to go on. I was going to post some things that always helped me but screw it with that attitude.
I'd venture to say you don't need self esteem, you need an attitude adjustment and over-haul.

Helping others is always nice but accomplishing something meaningful and important to yourselfputs the self in self-esteem.
