I always thought Woody Allen movies were funny and classic until one day I was telling a friend about his movies and she screeched at me "That pedophile". And I said "No, no his movies are funny". And then she glared at me and said "But he's a pedophile". So there was no use talking with her about it.

Bottom line Woody Allen did not adopt the Asian woman and he was never married to Mia Farrow. They married when she became an adult. So I'm not sure how he is a pedophile? And how that unusual marriage takes away from his hilarious movies that feature relationships at the forefront?

Well, you're talking about the difference between being legally wrong and morally wrong.

Yeah, he wasn't married to Mia Farrow, but their relationship was supposed to have been an exclusive one. So when he was supposed to be faithful to her, he was evidently having back-channel communication with her adopted daughter, a woman who is decades younger than he. Even if he didn't plow her like an Iowa cornfield while living in the same household, it still has the patina of creepiness.

However, I have a real issue with people who cannot separate the value of a work of art from the inherent flaws of the artist. I mean, if you looked at all the peccadilloes of all the great painters, musicians, filmmakers, and writers and took away those who did not live upright and moral lives by modern standards, I'm not sure you would have many left to discuss.

It's interesting how shrill people can be on their hot button subjects. I mean, earlier this year I was reading Lolita by Nabokov, undeniably a masterpiece despite the creepiness of the subject matter. Nabokov is a writer's writer, a master of the language, a person from whom any serious writer can learn amazing things. Yet, I was surprised at the hostility I faced in some quarters by the fact that I was simply reading the book, which revolves around a middle-aged man's affair with an adolescent girl. I mean, I watched Silence of the Lambs, too. Does that mean I'm going to become a cannibal?

He may not be a pedophile, but the situtation was certainly creepy to most people. Woody Allen was in a long-term, presumably committed relationship with Mia Farrow, and as such would have been somewhat of a father figure to Soon Yi.

It's like a witch hunt. People are very paranoid.

I heard they were estranged from each other or going through a break-up?

Hugh Heffner loves younger women. I don't see people calling him a pedophile.

No, but he's creepy nonetheless, despite all his self-important blather.

So what if they were estranged from each other. If I were single and in an exclusive relationship with a 40-year-old woman that began to sour, how would you feel if I made a play for the 18-year-old daughter? I'm confident that you wouldn't be so charitable. You'd find my actions despicable and you'd be right.

And that really touches on a different part of the whole discussion. Why do Hollywood celebrities get a free pass on their behavior by fawning apologists?

AFAIK Hugh Heffner didn't marry his long time GFs daughter. THAT is what makes it creepy.

I really can't believe you allow your appreciation of his work blur your judgment, but I'm also not surprised. We live in a celebrity obsessed society, and we've been making excuses for their poor behavior for decades. I like Allen's movies too, but I won't allow my appreciation of his work to compromise my opinion of right and wrong. He was in a 12 year COMMITTED relationship with Mia Farrow, and of all the women in the world that he could have had, he chose her 17 year old adopted daughter. Sorry, not cool.

It's not a free pass to anything.

I was saying he is not a pedophile considering he was interested in her when she was already in her twenties.
