Can you use facebook as a dating site?
Question; is it possible to use social networking sites as dating sites as well?
Everyone my age is on facebook, including lots of pretty girls. I've read a lot of advice about online-dating; about how the first email should be unique and clever and should comment on her personality and interests and such.
Problem is, most facebook accounts have a privacy setting. Only confirmed friends can view someone's profile; a stranger can only see one picture.
So what should I do? Should I friend-request just a million girls and start chatting up the ones that do or should I send an email first based on only 1 picture? What could I possibly say?

Oh good grief. Privacy settings are there for exactly that reason - to keep things private. Join a dating site.

I've known people who tried dating sites and used a few trial-offers on a few. Didn't hear any good things and didn't really like it.
For one thing, there's like 3 to 4 guys for every 1 female. How am I supposed to compete with those odds?
And there's like 10 to 20 unattractive girls or girls who live more than 20 miles away for every 1 attractive girl close by.
That and $30 a month. Plus I've heard a lot of them send out fake "flirts" to people who are about to quit just to get them to pay for another 30 days. I don't feel like taking that risk.

MySpace, at least in my experiences there, tends to be more "Wild West" as far as hooking up goes. FB, like ChessieMom said, tends to take privacy a bit more seriously.
As for online dating sites-
- You can't expect to get decent results in a trial period
- 4:1 is terrible odds to you? Ever try cruising a bar? It's more like 10:1.
- Unattractive girls - you might need to either refine your idea of attractive, or just concentrate on the one attractive one
- $30/month is cheap considering...

I've said this before. You get out of it what you put into it.

If you think those are tough odds, you need to forget about dating and get a blow-up doll. Are you related to TVSG?

Yep. You are related.

If you join for only 30 days, I doubt you'd find anyone in that short period of time. If you aren't willing to join for 6 month, then I wouldn't bother with it. Call the Dating Hotline and order the doll.

Okay, even IF I DID put the money down for a dating-site, that still doesn't answer my original question.
How do I open? How do I initiate a conversation with someone I've never met in person before? And how do I stand out from the 20 million other guys who emailed her?

Be yourself?
Tell her what you found impressive / appealing about her.
I would hope there's a reason you're attracted to a specific gal other than just looks. That's why they have the "Interests" sections. Find something to comment on in that section.
Again, just relax and be yourself. If it doesn't work out, it wasn't meant to be in the first place, and you saved yourself a ton of bad times.

Yeah, but like I said, Facebook doesn't allow you to see the "interests" section of strangers. Unless you're friends with a girl, you can only see 1 photo.

And why would it...?! To invite stalkers?
