I like it best when the picture shows something the guy likes doing. Preferably something I would also have an interest in. Hiking, for example. I would never notice things like old vs new t-shirt. Probably not haircut either. But I'm also not likely to notice those things in real life. Girls who do notice those things might notice it in a profile picture, I guess.
I don't like it when guys pose with girls in pictures. And I'm thinking "Is that his ex-girlfriend?". Actually, other people in general (kids, etc) are really not something I want to see in a profile picture.
I think the advice someone gave above to use pictures that reflect the kind of partner you're looking for is good. I wouldn't have thought about it that way, but now that I do, yes... I'm not really as interested in a profile if the guy is wearing fancy, formal clothes, and it turns out I'm not much of a fancy, formal person either.
The last two Raena77 posted would catch my interest - yes, because one is funny and one shows what the guy likes to do (and it's something I like to do too).
Actually I'd think the first one was pretty funny too and the guy would get points for that, but I'd want to see other real photos on there too.

Haha.....oh he comes in my dreams every night! oooh baaaby!
This reminds me of my female classmates in school. They were so obsessed with the movie stars and their muscular bodies.
I even remember telling them that no matter who they drool at, they will some day marry a rich MBA bastard with a fleshy pot belly and hairy all over like ron jeremy. They hated me for it, coz they all knew for sure it was gonnabe true some day.
