My situation is different:

Being hard-of-hearing, I use sign language as a primary communication tool. Therefore it would be awkward as hell twisting and turning everytime I wanted to talk to a date or even with friends. Regardless if I was hard-of-hearing or not, I would defnitely sit across from the other person that way you are looking at each other eyes at all times and reading their body language better.

The last time I had a date where we sat next to each other was prom 2 years ago but no making out. We were also with another couple.

The only time being side-by-side is for making out.

We sit across from each other, so we can play "footsie."
Seriously, I need elbow room.

Eating dinner across from each other with a knife and fork in each hand you are busy eating while just playing "footsie" with the feet can be a little on the horny side for later on.

Worked wonders for me...besides no one in the restaurant was aware of my doings.

If you have never done this with a young date or older person date...surprise her...things could change for the better.

I don't either, if I am using the phone.

Oh, I meant even in-person interactions. I keep my nose in my book or my attention on whatever I'm doing, and speak out audibly, not looking at the person in question.

I HATE when couples sit next to each other at a resturant. It doesn't look romantic or sweet it looks ridiculous and silly. You can't talk to someone comfortably if they are sitting right next to you, you have to turn to talk to them and how exactly do you do that in a BOOTH facing forward? To me it is much more intimate and normal to sit across from each other, look at each other, talk without awkwardness, eat without knocking each other in the jaw and then if that all goes well go and sit next to each other on one or the others couch or bed or somewhere that sitting next to is expected.
