In the US census statistics there is an interesting anomoly.

There are two catagories that are similar, but where men and women appear to report what is perhaps the same status, differently.

There are two catagories "Married - Spouse Absent" and "Separated".

When I first looked at this, I thought "separated" would be something they had agreed on (a legal status prior to divorce) and "Absent" would just mean that someone had left.

From the table for "Whites Alone" it breaks down the following:

Male Female
Absent 1,440,000 1,018,000
Separated 1,450,000 2,004,000
Total 2,890,000 3,022,000

Do men interpret a spouse leaving in a different way? Does this indicate for instance, that men could be more hopeful for a reconciliation?

The difference of 132,000 could be attributable to missing data on inter racial marriages breaking up. However, there could also be an epidemic of bigamy. Is this possible today?

At one time, when divorce was difficult to get and "disappearing" quite easy, men would sometimes just leave, change their name and remarry. Unless the woman wanted to remarry or had an issue with the ownership of property, she might not follow him up for decades and often this would just be to get a legal judgement declaring her husband dead.

Anyone have experiences or insite to add to this?
