One divorce is ok. Two or more is a red flag.

It depends on your competition. At 26, yeah that is a problem. At 56, I imagine that's the norm for singles.

I could not care less what the "General American stigma" is about divorce, by the way. Divorce is painful process, and worth avoiding. More than one divorce is a pattern; in my book, a problem at any age.

The only way it would bother me is if the guy was constantly going on and on and on complaining about his ex wife all.the.time.

To me, it all depends on where the blame is placed. I would not date a divorced man who places all the blame on his ex-wife. There are no exceptions to this rule.

Smart! Just as it takes two to make a relationship, it usually also takes two to break one.

Generally there are three sides to every divorce -- his side, her side and the truth which usually lies somewhere in the middle.

Divorce is pretty common these days. If you tell people you've never been married, they act surprised. I really don't hold it against the person unless they've been married a bunch of times or if their marriage didn't last long. Marriage is hard work. Some people do everything right and still can't make it work, probably because they weren't right for one another to begin with. I don't penalize people for making mistakes like that. I have more respect for the person who tried their hardest and failed than the person who bailed out on it after only a year.

And often the truth is so completely unrelated to either his or her story that you might as well call it another genre

Divorce is the norm. Most persons have divorced at least once. So really there is no stigma, as far as I can see.

I'd agree that if there are multiple divorces, it is a red flag. But per se, not really.

Someone being divorced isn't the big deal it once was. I'd much rather see someone divorced than staying in a miserable marriage with a person who beats or cheats on them. Some of the nicest people I know are or have been divorced.
