Actually, the cooking thing has been an icebreaker on a few occasions when I brought food to a gathering.

I think an actual appreciation of beauty, intelligence, etc, is far more flattering than the general come-ons. I realize the physical is the first thing you see, but someone who takes the time to try and get to know you will usually say all the right things, whatever they may be at the time.
