I don't consider anything that happened to you personally, gossip, if you talk about it. You have every right to talk about yourself and your experiences (provided you are not being solely malicious). If you heard something about someone else, and decided to spread that around, without really knowing for sure if it's true or not - that's gossip.
Well put, dgfurman. Personal experiences, related truthfully, are not gossip. But speculation and spreading negative, second-hand "information" about someone, are gossip. Gossip is just wrong.
If what you say is indeed the truth and it isn't done with malicious intent-as in you are trying to compare notes and solve a problem- then no, it isn't gossip.
I think it depends on intention. If you're doing it to "spread the word" about that person, then, yes, it is gossip.
If you are simply frustrated and need to get it off your chest, then no.
good point spinx
it's all about intention, it can be the exact same actions, but with different intentions it is gossip and it is malicious
and of course determining your intention requires an honesty within your self...many people who gossip and "justify" it, are not being honest with themselves.
also telling what happened to "stir the pot", or get attention for yourself, or create drama, or get sympathy, those are also gossip, as are telling the same story over and over and over
good to get in the habit within of asking yourself, "Why am I saying this? What do I hope to gain from this? What benefit for me is there in telling this? How many times have i already told this story? Why am i repeating it again? and again?"
