I prefer soft, "romantic" lighting but it doesn't matter that much to me. Surprisingly, I don't find myself too self-conscious even with the light on. I have lots of self esteem issues, but I don't really think about it in the moment. I figure the guy is probably happy to be getting sex and focusing on that instead of my flaws.

I prefer low lighting because I just feel more "romantic" with less lighting. However, it doesn't matter either way..............as long as I'm gettin' some!
Lights off. That way both my partner and I aren't worried about feeling self-conscious and therefore won't be distracted. Second, not relying so much on your eyes forces you to use your other senses more, things like touch, smell and taste.
