. Haha. There is this machine that builds your leg muscles which is good, however you pick a weight and sit on it, then spread your legs then bring them back together.
I feel you sierra... The women in this country are different than what they were just a few decades ago.

This isn't about how men and women have changed over the decades. This is about proper gym etiquette. I go to the gym a lot, so I know that it's not a meat market. It's not like going to a bar, or going to school, or work, or anything like that. It's not that you can't meet people at the gym. I have, but I'm a regular, and all of us "regulars" who come at the same time the same day of the wk all recognize each other. We all say hi, maybe a little "how's it goin'", and that's it. But I only know a few by name.
Sometimes, women (the regulars) will gather in the snack area to have a coffee and chat, esp. after a class. But otherwise, it's pretty well known that when you go to the gym, that's your time to work out, not hang out. It's "gym culture", I guess. People don't go there to socialize, and a lot of people don't like to have their workout interrupted by chit chat. It can really mess up the flow of your routine.
When I'm doing cardio, I don't like to talk. It's too hard to carry on a conversation and be huffing and puffing at the same time. When I'm on weights, I don't like to be interrupted. I'm counting reps, trying to remember how many sets I've done, and what I have to do next. Some people carry around little journals with them to write all that down. It's that intense.
So don't take it personally if people don't want to strike up a conversation. You are going to have to work extra hard to get yourself noticed. Maybe if you can leave at the same time he does, you can try to make some small talk then.
