Yes, most people have and will continue to do so. One just needs to look around to see the effects of either turning their back on Him or denying Him altogether.

Do you mean America as in the government of the United States or the American people?
I think it matters because the government was set up to separate church and state so I would have to agree that not only has the government turned it's back so to speak but they were never set up to take God, or at least anyone's specific god, into account in the first place, as it should be.
As for the people, well the majority of US citizens claim faith in something so I would have to say no they haven't turned their backs on Him. However that doesn't mean that they aren't so tied up with all the struggles in this life that they aren't distracted from Him at times.

Answer: Yes.
Does this mean that America somehow needs to "turn to face God" once again? Answer: No. The God worshipped by so many in America's past was a God that tolerated slavery, genocide of Native Americans, lynchings of minorities after accusations based on unsubstantiated charges, widespread pollution of America's rivers, spoilation of millions of acres of land, etc.

I think many people around the world have turned away from God (or were never turned in the first place), in particular many of those who claim to be religious. Many call themselves Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, etc but few are really trying to live their faith truthfully.
The lack of tolerance for our fellow man, rampant consumerism, and incredible selfishness of our age have made it more difficult for us to connect with the divine. Only when we free ourselves of these chains will we (as a people), be able to connect with God. Its not too late.

I fear that most Xians would be unwilling to give up their comfortable lives to do what their bible tells them to do and 'follow' their Jesus.
Watched a programme tonight about Hindu holy men. They give away everything they own, live in poverty and worship their gods. Would that Xians were as 'true' to their holy book.

I think, perhaps, the question leads to the correct answer. but not the one you want to hear.
I think God has turned it's back on America. Justifiably. Much like the perversion of the church and beliefs that led to Sodom and Gomorrah, religious factions in this country have forgotten Gods teachings and are bending them to their own use.
Whoring, theft, debauchery, aborting the scripture for their own ends, and other transgressions such as sodomy; they will bring Damnation on all.
