Gay or atheist?
I realize ALL of the threads that has the word "gay" in the title are inevitably "locked," but here goes another one.
I am from the Caribbean and some of our islands, most notably Jamaica, are not exactly too friendly to gay individuals. Well for kicks, I asked the folks on a Jamaican website if they would prefer I were gay or atheist. Not sure why I was surprised, but quite a few folks admitted they would prefer that I were gay than being an atheist. I wonder what would have been the reply if I said I was gay AND also and atheist?
What response would I get from folks in this country if I asked the question here? And by the way, I am not gay nor am I an atheist.

It's a very diverse country and i don't think that city-data religious/philosophy is necessarily the best representative of that diversity.
I, for one, don't judge anyone by their religious affiliation or their sexual preference.
I prefer to be around loving and kind and caring people. Simple.
Why should i (or anyone) care who someone loves and/or engages with sexually or how they access (or don't) truth, spirit, "god", realization, etc. ?

Hmmmm.....I guess if a choice has to be made, I can see why they might say gay. Atheists are perceived as a threat and evil, while gays are perceived as wrong, but misguided and harmless and could be converted way easier than an atheist.
IMO, Atheists are scary. Gays are not.

This is along the lines of what I expected to hear from at least, [some] fundamentalist Christians. Thank you for your honest reply and contribution.

As an atheist who's been to Jamaica, I can tell you that the big deal down there is rastafarianism and like christians up here, they base all of their lives around it.
But I heard that they're not fond of gays, and on occasion they still have lynchings.

I don't feel threatened by either one. Even though I don't agree with them, it certainly would not keep me from being friends with either one.

Do you actually know any atheists? I suspect that you may be stereotyping atheists in the same manner that many people do to Christians. I've read countless posts on this forum for a very long time and I can't honestly think of anyone who was actually scary, even if they thought the total opposite of what I do. If you knew me in person I can guarantee that you wouldn't find me the least bit scary.

Tell a gay man his shoes are "sooo last season" and see how scary he gets.
What can I say, I hang out with gay guys and I'm an atheist. I'm screwed either way!
