Default Hebrew Bible and Christian Old Testament

I was told by someone on another thread that there are significant differences between the Jewish Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament. I was told that not only are some of the christian old testament books combined in the Hebrew Bible, but that there are differences in the content too. Does anyone know anything about this?

"Christian Old Testament?" What are you talking about? It sounds like someone was kind of mixed up when they came up with that term.

There are differences between the old testament as used by the Jews ("hebrew bible") and the old testament as used by christians ("christian old testament"). I do not know what those differences are, nor do I know how important they are in the respective theologies.

Um, from my understanding the Old Testament that Christians use is the bible translated from the Hebrew bible. There are some difference in some words but the same content.

It depends on which Christian bible you are using. Catholic? A standard Protestant bible? Greek Orthodox?

Greek Orthodox is based on the early version used by Christians prior to the 4th century when the catholic church picked the books they wanted in the bible. At some point, the Catholic church either added, (or protestant churches dropped) books like Tobies, Judith, Machahees, the book of wisdom, etc.

The end result is that the Greek orthodox bible, which is still translated in an old greek forum, is the oldest, and has the most books in it's old testiment. The catholic bible has a few less books than the greek orthodox, but more than the protestant, and the protestant bible has the fewest books of them all.

The Protestant version of the OT is in a different order than the hebrew bible, and it is arranged different. But it is the closest to the hebrew bible of the three that I've mentioned.

Someone on another thread said that there are differences in Elisha (?) too--that the Christian bible says the messiah would be born of a virgin, whereas the Hebrew bible says the messiah would be born of a young woman. Anybody know anything about this?

The interpretations are different, in a few different ways.

But as far as books, the protestant old testament is mostly the same works as the Hebrew bible, only it is interpreted differently in spots.

The Catholic bible has added books, the eastern orthodox has even more, and is most like the works the early Christians used before the that little conference in 400AD.

The text is Isaiah 7:14

The word is:

H5959 עלמה ‛almâh al-maw'
Feminine of H5958; a lass (as veiled or private): - damsel, maid, virgin.

(Amp) Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign: Behold, the young woman who is unmarried and a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel [God with us].(1)

(ASV) Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

(BBE) For this cause the Lord himself will give you a sign; a young woman is now with child, and she will give birth to a son, and she will give him the name Immanuel.

(CEV) But the LORD will still give you proof. A virgin is pregnant; she will have a son and will name him Immanuel.

(CLV) Wherefore, Yahweh Himself will give a sign to you:Behold! the damsel shall be pregnant and bear a son, and you call his name Emmanu-El."

(Darby) Therefore will the Lord himself give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and shall bring forth a son, and call his name Immanuel.

(DRB) Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign. Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son and his name shall be called Emmanuel.

(EMTV)

(ESV) Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

(GNB) Well then, the Lord himself will give you a sign: a young woman who is pregnant will have a son and will name him 'Immanuel.'

(GW) So the Lord himself will give you this sign: A virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and she will name him Immanuel [God Is With Us].

(KJV) Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

(KJV+) Therefore3651 the Lord136 himself1931 shall give5414 you a sign;226 Behold,2009 a virgin5959 shall conceive,2029 and bear3205 a son,1121 and shall call7121 his name8034 Immanuel.6005

(KJVA) Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

(KJVR) Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

(LITV) So, The Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold! The virgin will conceive and will bring forth a son; and she shall call His name Immanuel.

(MKJV) So, the Lord Himself shall give you a sign. Behold, the virgin will conceive and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call His name Immanuel.

(MSG) So the Master is going to give you a sign anyway. Watch for this: A girl who is presently a virgin will get pregnant. She'll bear a son and name him Immanuel (God-With-Us).

(NET) For this reason the sovereign master himself will give you a confirming sign.24 Look, this25 young woman26 is about to conceive27 and will give birth to a son. You, young woman, will name him28 Immanuel.29

(NKJV) Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.[2]

(RV) Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

(VW) Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign: Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bring forth a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel.

(WEB) Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

(Webster) Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

(YLT) Therefore the Lord Himself giveth to you a sign, Lo, the Virgin is conceiving, And is bringing forth a son, And hath called his name Immanuel,

As you can see most translations go with the virgin birth myth derived from pagan religions of the Greco/Roman origins. The myth perpetuates till today but we all know now know how conception occurs which by the way was only discovered in the late 19th century.

A pregnancy w/o the male part, would be a clone of the mother. This happens in nature but not in humans.

I guess Mary had the best excuse for a surprise teen pregnancy - not sure if a daughter today would be able to sell that one to her parents - but you never know.
