This weekend the Muscular Dystrophy Association is having its annual Telethon, there is a long list of corporate sponsors that donate to this particular charitable organization and for a number of years I have been involved with these telethons through one of the charitable organizations that I belong to and not once have I seen any religious organization make any kind of a donation to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, they are not listed among the charitable organizations that donate to this association and it makes me wonder with all the money that these different religious organizations collect in the name of charity, why is it they don't make donations to charitable associations such as this? So where are the religious organizations that claim to give so much to charity. Makes you wonder what they're doing with all that money.

Fat chance. Religious organizations are on the way out and in fact some are almost bankrupt. What they otta do is starting pimping their fund raising activities towards many of the more lucurative Indian Gaming Casinos. That would be the real challenge. I have many a family member on the Rez and they are'nt so easily persuaded to letting loose some of that loot. But they are the ones now with the big bucks.

I would argue that there are many Christians and Christian organizations that contribute to and help MDA. However the MDA’s call for embryonic stem cell research has created a divide between them and some Christians.
pt,
Do you know if MDA has backed off of their call for further embryonic stem cell research?

They have backed off some, at least publicly, but I think that if that kind of research can help towards bettering the life of others and of the future it deserves to at least be looked at, anything that can help better the lives of those from these debilitating diseases deserves being looked at. I have a brother-in-law who suffers greatly from a form of muscular dystrophy and if this kind of research were available when he was younger I seriously believe that it would've helped him, I have known a number of individuals who have suffered with this debilitating disease and it is not a pretty sight. I do not believe that a person's religious belief should keep one from helping others.

They can't donate any money to cure a disease that causes untold suffering, cause their sadistic sky daddy gave those people the disease for a reason. To help cure a disease is to work against their imaginary sky daddy, and that will get your an eternity of suffering, cause sky daddy loves them
In my little corner of the world, when the local telethon is on once an hour there are many pledges and challenges from different denominations in the area.
As for myself I pray that stem cell research, even embryotic research be awarded the grants and support it deserves..I would never go along with any religious organization telling me what I should or shouldn't believe or that stem cell research and application is wrong..

You know, I've got to commend your area for doing that, unfortunately yours is probably one of maybe a handful where the different denominations get involved in something such as this, the organization that I belong to that is involved with MDA is the oldest sponsor for this, it has been involved with it since 1951, I personally have been involved since 1992 and for two years as the head of this organization and I am still involved and will continue to be and it's unfortunate that among the lists of donors I have yet to see any religious organization contribute to this very worthy cause, this should not be a religious matter, this is people helping people and doing what is right.

There are many needs to give to, and Believers do give, just that they are not to be told by others what to do nor judged by others for what they do. Jesus said to follow Him, and not to worry what others are doing.
But as to Believers "giving", first; you have made a general charge and are judging generally without investigation of specific Church organizations to see what they give and where they give and why they give. I know that the Church my daughter and son-in-law go to has their benovelance ministry, which people donate money to by specifically checking what they wish their donations to go to on the tithing envelopes, and which money the elders decide by prayerful consideration of what and who they will give aid to, and how much.
Daughter was involved with children's Church ministry at a time when the father of 2 girls she taught choir to was injured in a work accident in his own auto- mechanic business he ran out of his own garage at home, and was not able to work for a while in his line of work. Without the Church advertizing it at all, the elders gave that man $10,000 dollars cash to help in his time of need. His wife had left him and the girls, and he was struggling to make ends meet. He mentioned that to my daughter, when they were talking after Church one day, and if he had not told her we would not have known of that particular instance, but we do know of other helps that particular Church has done because we once attended it, and know pastors from there, personally.
We use our own resources as we feel led of the LORD to help those in need, and that is the way with many Believers. We have been on the receiving end in our younger days, and we have been on the giving end in our later years. That's just the way a real Church functions.
Now if you want to view a high profile Church that meets all the demands Jesus gave us, and films it all, here is one for you. there are 8 parts which you can view. I list only part 2 for you, and you can click the links for the others. -Hope you enjoy!

Or maybe they give money to other groups and not Jerry Lewis's?
I think many Christians want conditions cured, but so what if they really don't want them all cured? I am glad I have the condition I have. It is a part of who I am. That you need to live in a sterile Universe where painlessness is everything is fine for fragile souls, but not everyone is so weak or childish. Some of us are glad to be different. Some of us accept that real life will entail some suffering and that we learn from adversity rather than from constantly running away from every potential boo-boo.

I'm not glad to have my disorder. In fact, I donate a lot of time and money to helping cure what I have. It's debilitating, hinders me in what I want to do and causes untold strife not only to myself, but to my family and friends as well. I'm about to go on a barely ok'd FDA trial for a drug that's just starting to be used on humans. I'm not happy about it, but my normal medication is on a biochemical hiatus for now.
In response to the OP: The churches in my area raise money for themselves, not necessarily for others. They raise money to help THEIR missionaries, to help THEIR flock members go on vacation (Hume Lake anyone?) and to expand their churches. Very very rarely will I hear of a church donating time or money to something that doesn't absolutely directly affect their congregation.
To each his/her own though. They're a 'private' organization so they can do as they please. I will never donate my time or money to them, though.
