I have always wondered about this::: For the Christians

Do you take the Bible literally or not?

Why?

For those that don't take it literal, how do you know you are not suppose to? Why was it written that way, why not just say what they meant, why cause all the confusion?

Oops...sorry! I was going to post something here, and then I realized you've limited your respondents to Christians only. I'll go quietly, now that I realize this is a restricted neighborhood.

New International Version (1984)
"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

You can interject if you want to,, although I am interested in people that follow the bibles thoughts on this. I have never understood this, some say no some say yes. I think it is all bull myself, but i would still like to try to understand there thoughts.

The way the Bible is written as it is... is a primer for purifying our natural love... loving one another, doing good works and believing in something higher than ourselves. The confusion arises in the NT, especially, because it wasn't written as a daily journal or diary... it was written many years after Jesus' passing and his message and teachings were lost... so religious leaders at the time came up with what they believed was his message... that he was God in the flesh, that his mother was a virgin, that he died on the cross to save our sins, etc.

For those of us who have gone beyond the Bible... we are seekers of a higher truth and have been lead to understand about the necessity of receiving God's Divine Love, so that we may become divine beings as Jesus was... there are only snippets of this revelation in the Bible... it's like finding a needle in the haystack, but it's there.

Which parts?

The Bible contains parts that are symbolic, parts that are poetry, parts that are parables and parts that are literal.

I take the literal parts literally.

I take the whole Bible as true.

I think its written in the language of mind... Since it is about the mind and how the mind of man operates by the sheer power of thought it's about thoughts, ideas, visions, dreams, attitudes, emotions
and least of all... actions. For instance man can kill his bad thoughts and ideas but he cannot kill another man for his bad thoughts or his ideas.
So many ideas in the world it use to make me wonder where they all came from and whose big idea
was it to create a Bible if the people didn't stop to think about what they were thinking.

I cannot sponge everything else I know or have experienced when I open the Bible to read it. I've had some science and anthropology classes, and I'm a huge fan of natural history museums, so I know that the earth was not created in 7 literal days. I can't sponge that kind of knowledge from my mind when I read the Bible, so I when I read something in the Bible that is not consistent with what I otherwise know to be true, then I understand that it is there to be read metaphorically.

Why was the Bible written the way it was? You have to understand it is not one book, it is a library of books in one cover. There are law books, history books, poetry, helpful hints, narrative, prophecy, and letters. Each type of book is written in a manner appropriate to what it is.

I have always wondered about this:::For the Fundie Atheists.

Do you believe your bias, prejudice, intolerance, and insults, can be veiled as curiosity...will the Christians see through that or not?

Why?

If you do think the Christians won't notice your bias, prejudice, intolerance and insults, do you think they are supposed to? Why try to disguise it that way, why not just say what you meant, why cause all the confusion?

That didn't sound like a calculated insult to me. "I think it is all bull myself" is merely a personal opinion, not offensively stated unless one thinks that orthodoxy should be the law of the land, rather than freedom of (and from) religion.
