It is one thing for a thread to veer off-topic (from being Northern Virginia-centric, in this case) when the conversation or debate is friendly. It is another when it becomes something like this. Nonetheless, this may be a worthwhile topic to discuss...in the Religion forum.

So would you object if someone came to your door to try to convert you to atheism? Actually, you might seize that as an opportunity to proselytize. Hmm...

Ah! How about if someone came by to preach to you the life-changing benefits of receptive homosexual penetration? Would that bother you? I sure hope not--because by your logic, that just shows you're insecure!

What I hate about anyone pitching things door to door is just by knocking on your door they put you on the spot. Door to door sales of anything including religion and charities are the hard sell. Which I HATE. The exceptions being neighborhood kids and the volunteer fire dept.

If I'm interested in something be it God or pest control I'll seek it out. I don't need some a-hole knocking on my door at dinner time and pissing me off.

I keep a 8 X 10 photo of this kid on a stick near my front door. I hold it up the moment they start in on their pitch. It's very effective.
