I though this would be good question to ask while I was browsing this section of the forums. I am really non-religious / agnostic, but with a Muslim background. I live in Dallas and come across a lot of Christians wanting to talk me about religion.
Though I do admit talking religious ideas is some what of interest to me, I usually avoid it. So far in mine life I have avoiding talking to them at all. I am more afraid I will end up offending them and getting into a huge argument. I usually say I am not interest in talking about religion or some other excuse and go on mine way.
Now mine question is do these Christian really want discuss religion openly? Or are they are just there to convert me to their denomination? It seems like will turn to be big lecture why they are right about their beliefs...
Are Christians inviting me to talk to them really open to dissenting thought?
Some are - some aren't. There are a lot of folks here who don't do the status quo thing so - fire away (and be prepared for both the open and the closed).

Most christians are super-sensitive, think you are disparaging their deity by expressing your opinion, and want to convert you to validate their own beliefs..... but that is not to say there aren't a few "normal" ones here and there...
I am not a Christian in the normal sense of the label...but that's my 2 cents.

I'll discuss religion with you. Although the chances are you may become offended by the truth that you are currently a disiciple of Satan and heading for eternal torment in hell.
If the truth doesn't offend you then you may like to consider Jesus of Nazareth. He walked the earth some 2000 years ago. He went to a shameful death on a cross, pouring out his life upon the earth, so that all those who look to him and believe that he was the Word of God Incarnate will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.
For an introduction to Jesus Christ one is invited to read the four gospels written at the beginning of the New Testament of the Holy Bible. Your reaction to them will reveal your heart to you.
Oh, and, the truth of all religion is that there is no salvation in it. Salvation can only be found in the Lord Jesus Christ. Those who find this world to be a good place will not be interested in finding Salvation, nor indeed will they consider it necessary,

Gee, why would anyone find that offensive? Hahahaha.

I don't know the people you mean or how they react when they talk to you. I guess if they act very intense and serious in all such conversations they might be wanting to convert you or for you to convert to them or something. Although I wouldn't say that's a 100%.
I think sometimes though you can tell when someone is saying "I want to talk about X because I think it's interesting" versus "I want to show you why I'm right and you're not."
Still I'd say for either kind when you talk religion with Christians (assuming you want a pleasant conversation as I think you do) you should avoid being snide, condescending, or hyper-critical of Jesus. I think more Christians have experienced the "how could you be stupid enough to believe that?" statement than people realize as we sometimes experience it from other Christians. The denominations don't always respect each other you know. Also if you do not intend to offend, but offend them, maybe make it clear it was not your intent and be nice about it. Real conversations have an advantage to online conversations in that you can tell when a person is sincerely hurt or annoyed and, if a person has normal human empathy, one can respond to that. In life I'm somewhat less harsh or opinionated than online because I can tell when a person is bored or exasperated or hurt by what I'm saying and feel bad about it.
Mostly I think if you avoid making them/us feel stupid or making blanket condemnations or insulting our founder you shouldn't have a problem. Even if they want to convert you they might respect your civility and then lose interest if you genuinely seem uninterested in converting. If they keep harassing you on it than maybe you can call someone or walk away. Also maybe find a gentle way to ask if they're wanting to convert you as how they respond might give you a clue.

As you can tell by the replies, most people here resent Christians, Christianity and the Christians church.

I was waiting for your objection! I knew you would make one!
You know it's true though - even Jesus said that religious people go over land and sea trying to find one convert, and when they finally "catch" one they make him two-fold a child of hell as themselves. It's the truth.
