Sorry, I know this question was directed at believers, but I would like to add one more point of view:

The concept of a "spirit" is the product of a 14th century understanding of the way the mind works.

It was used to explain why humans "think" in the period of time before we knew that every facet of the mind is explainable by the brain.

It depends on how you define spirit. I assume you're using the metaphysical kind, although there is also the concept of a metaphorical spirit which would encompass the values of many nonbelievers such as empathy, compassion, social harmony, love etc.
