I'd like to be immortal, as long as I could be healthy the whole time, and as long as I had the option to opt out and die if I felt like it. But, my idea of immortality would not include a 'heaven' with some boring deity.
For me, I would want immortality, but as a living person. I would want this because I thive on experiences. I enjoy experiencing life. There is so much to see and do and who knows what the future hold. You just can't get all things you want to experience in 70-80 years (assuming one doesn't meet with accidents or disease). This is why I don't waste my time on inconsequential things.
I agree with MC, if it's just hanging around some etheral plane doing what amounts to nothing, I'd rather take non-existence.
I see what you both mean. If I could roll the years back a decade or two, I would agree with you about immortality.....here on earth....not up there somewhere.
However, time has passed and I have reached the age where I can't DO things. It's Boredom with a capital 'B'. Non-existence holds no fear for me.
Just a personal note here. My mother was probably considered a "good woman." She was a believer. But I have to tell you honestly, if there was a chance that I would have to spend eternity listening to that woman run her mouth, I would choose anything else.

Darn straight there, Fullback. I can't imagine running out of things to do in this reality, not for a very very long time. There's always something new to learn or do. From what I hear described of the mythical 'heaven', I want nothing to do with it because it sounds like a complete snooze-fest. Imagine being surrounded on all sides by the kind of people here who hate gays, knock on your door trying to convert you, endlessly quote verses from their 'holy' tome of choice, abhor sex, and are just frankly prudish. Booooooring. I'd rather die.
So that I can experience all that there is even after this life. I know that surely there is more to heaven than what is depicted in the bible or any other spiritual book. I think we also experience there but in a different manner. I don't believe we sit and gaze at God or sing and do all that some people like to think. I just want to experience.
I don't want eternal life regardless of any cavats. The thought of dying feels right. It is what every other living thing does. Plants die, deer die, and I die. It feels like the natural order of things. I have made my peace with it and want no more.
No scripture quotes about what God has promised, please...but just why do you want to have eternal life?
What's wrong with just death and nothing else? You certainly won't know anything about it if that's all it is.
Perhaps a better question should be....which eternal life do you want or are looking for? The one Jesus spoke of or the one mainstream Christianity has made up.
John 17:3 This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

I want eternal life WITH GOD because I know even the best of my imagination cannot picture the utter joy, amazing beauty and fantastic wonder that such an existance will bring

And???? Is that it? just knowing the one true God? That sounds as if your idea of Eternal Life is some sort of reward. A reward for living according to the bible. Would you have lived the same, treated your neighbor the same, if you didn't believe that you would have Eternal Life as a reward?
