No. In fact it will be a milestone worth celebrating. It will be the 1000th consecutive sunday or christmas or easter that I have missed church.
Plans are to visit my parents with our kids and open christmas presents there. Will also visit wife's parents (who live five miles from my parents) and do the hanukkah thing there.
- What are your plans for Christmas? Are you gonna attend church this year?

I haven't attended church for 30 years, thank god. I intend to spend xmas kicking back in my pajamas with my feet up, a laptop and Xbox360 in front of me, a fine Irish whiskey within reach, and a gigantic plate of hot and spicy nachos. I will only move in order to visit the bathroom or to refill my noshables. I will game away the weekend on my computer while streaming Netflix movies over the Xbox360.
I will waste no time thinking about the misappropriation of the pagan winter holidays by the religious.

Huh, I never thought about it that way. Let's see...my family attended services at minimum three times a week. Multiply that by 52 weeks in the year, and 30 years...that's 4,680 services that I haven't attended. Think of all the time saved! By god, assuming each service was about 2 hours long (typical for my parents' religion) then that's 9360 hours not wasted on church! That's 390 days...more than a freakin' year of life and living! That's a damn good deal as far as I'm concerned. That's not even accounting for the time spent 'worshipping' daily in parochial school, nor for extra ceremonies for religious holidays, nor for proselytizing, or any other number of religious activities I was forced to perform growing up.

My mom is flying out here and celebrating Christmas with us here! It's our first Christmas in our first house! And no, we won't be going to church. Never really have so why would I start now?
Christmas Eve is on Friday night this year. So obviously, I'm going to the club. Come Saturday night, I'm going to the club again. Come Sunday morning, I'll still be too tipsy to go to church. If I do sober up in time for church, I might go for the free food (but I doubt it).
Oh yes! Christmas Eve service is my favorite of the year. Going into the dark church, being handed a candle with the rest of the congregants, the blessing of the Nativity, and finally, the utter majesty of hearing a beautiful choir explode with the Gloria in excelsis Deo. It truly is a moving experience every single year. The beauty of coming out of a church after 1 in the morning to the absolute hush in the neighborhood streets is so peaceful. Most people (where my parents live) follow the tradition of leaving their Christmas lights on all night on Christmas Eve - so me and my Mom tend to take a drive around the neighborhood oohing and aahing over the decorations. And then to bed ... !!!!
I think my entire family is going to do something a little different this year. Ordinarily, we have a huge feast at my parent's house followed by an over-indulgence in all things alcohol. I think this year all my siblings, my wife, and my parents are going to meet at the casino and eat at one of the really good restaurants there. Then we're going to go out on the casino floor and gamble as we indulge in all things alcohol. We like to make Baby Jesus proud.
