What happens to animals when they die?" author Ptolemy Tompkins wonders in his new book.

"I looked into that dog's eyes and knew there was something more," says Tompkins, a writer for the Christian magazine Guideposts.

I was involved in a very interesting discussion on whether animals go to heaven. In the end it was very much on the lines of the problem of evil. Why would God part you from your animals, rather like like 'how could you live in heaven while your relatives were burning?'

Some bit the bullet: No. No animals in heaven, but administered the happy pill to the effect that you would be so drugged up of Godlove that you wouldn't notice.

Others copped out and said that Fluffy and Tiddles would be with you in bliss and never mind the theology. After all if science is wrong if you don't want to believe it, then why not theology?

Others triesd to wriggle out of it by saying that you beloved animals would not be in heaven, but there would be lots of other heavenly animals. A bit like saying, your kids would all burn in Hell but no worries, mate, there would be a lot of heavenly infants to replace them.

If they thought that would make the anxious questioners feel better it is no more self delusion than is needed for any other aspect of theist belief.

The atheist take would be rather like as summed up in the James Herroit books: "I'm a bit foggy abut all this but one thing I'm sure of: wherever you are going, your animals are going there, too".

For kids who have lost a pet, I think the answer is usually that they go to heaven of course...

There's been no revelation from God that I know of concerning this, so the answer for me has to remain "I don't know."

Since God took the time and effort to save animals in a flood, and takes the time and effort brag on them in the book of Job, commands the Israelites to provide for the animals in their care, etc... one would think He isn't callous in this regard.

Just simply have no idea what that leads to in regards to the afterlife.

Same place every other living creature goes when it dies. Nowhere. Then the body rots and is eaten by insects and other critters, and finally melts into the ground where it turns into fertilizer.

Now this makes me glad you can have your dog cremated, that ends the insects, and critters part. Ashes go back to nature much easier than organic tissue, and we always need pot ash.

Sure, why not. If you're going to believe all this other crazy stuff, why not believe dogs will go to heaven?
Perhaps there they will pets, let's say humans, or at least cats. I mean if we are going to talk crazy talk, why not go all the way. Dog's will be playing poker in heaven as a matter of course.

OTOH, I don't think my last dog would have went to heaven, under any scenario.

I don't mind if you pick on Eagles fans, but please leave the cats out of it.

Not that I believe in heaven anyway.
