I posted this in another section, but I think I might get some great feedback here as well......For the next 5 weeks the class I am taking focuses on Ethics and Morals and I have a few suggestions for topics that we could discuss in class as they relate to the subject. I just wanted to see what kind of response I might expect when I brought them up. I'm sure none of you mind throwing out your opinions. Just please try to be respectful in your response. I'm not trying to offend anyone. Thanks in advance.
Should prostitution be legalized in ALL states?
Is a church that has a large number of openly gay members immoral in allowing these members to be a part of their congregation?
Would it be seen as immoral if an openly gay person was the pastor of a church?

1.. What a person does with there body is there business. Although I think it is devaluing themselves, that is there issue.
2. While I don't do church or believe in what they do, if they allow gay people in, I think that is pretty cool. Gay people are who they are and it is nice for a church to recognize that.
3. I don't see being gay as immoral. They are who they were born to be. How can that be immoral.
Nea1-it is interesting that you say gay people are born to be who they are.... I have posed the born gay question a great many times. As a heterosexual, who I believe was born this way, I say why not. But from answers I get from a lot of people, they say sexuality is a choice. IDK, I'm on the fence with the born gay issue. Thanks for responding

Then you ask them, when did they choose which sex they would love or be attracted to?
Simple question, I have asked it of a few believers, they had nothing to say or changed the topic. One said " I don't know probably when I was young" I then replied, "oh so you were attracted to the same sex then?" He got angry and walked away.
1. I think if prostitution was legalized - there is a possibililty that it could be better controlled and therefore be much safer for all involved. Making it illegal hasn't eradicated it from society - merely made it much more dangerous. If it were to be legalized - I think it should be restricted to "brothels" and such - and there should be strict rules implemented for the safety of the girls. I see nothing wrong with legalizing prostitution.
2&3 - Being gay is not a choice. If there is a God - he created us the way we are. I know several homosexuals who are religious. If God doesn't turn his back on anyone - why should a church that is supposedly in his name? People who tell you being gay is a choice simply don't know what they are talking about. In my eyes - it's really that simple. I remember having a crush on Michael J. Fox when I was about 5 years old. I also had a crush on this nerdy little boy in my kindergarten class. I didn't choose to be straight - I simply am. Just like my gay friends didn't choose to be gay - they simply are.
I think the first question is, "Why do we have ethics and morals?"
My answer: To help our 'tribe' and culture survive and prosper.
It helps our tribe function smoothly if we agree on a common code of behavior. Some tribes have very free sexual behavior and others have more strict limits on sexual behavior. As long as the standards are acceptale to most members of the tribe, then the tribe can function OK.
In some societies, prostitutes are punished severly and sometimes killed. Other societies have lots of prostitutes. Either way is OK as long as most members of the tribe agree on rules of behavior.

Wait, so you believe that the killing of prostitutes is justifiable as long as it keeps things running smoothly for the rest of the tribe? Maybe this is just my modern liberal Western POV talking, but that's kind of messed up.
Is it immoral for a religion or political group to encourage discrimination, hatred, or harmful acts (such as denying equal freedoms and rights) against people who do not conform to their view of morality? What if the only harm those people can be accused of is that they exist?

Yes, that is exactly what I believe.
I can't think of an example of society where prostitutes are routinely killed, but from what I hear in the news, some of the tribes or societies in Pakistan or Afganistan treat adultery very harshly. These societies have survived longer than ours has. I don't think we should be judgemental about these societies and say they are wrong.

Answer to first question: No.
Answer to second question: It doesn't matter.
