I googled this definition:
A reverent petition made to God, a god, or another object of worship.
And petition:
A solemn supplication or request to a superior authority; an entreaty

If God is perfect, why would we petition him. Petitioning perfection seems to be an oxymoron. God would only need one reply. All I have created is perfect, what else could you possibly want or need.

I believe in the power of prayer. Prayer is very powerful and it's not always "asking" for favors or petitions, it is just direct communication with God. You can be driving in your car alone, and talk to God in prayer.

I have personally experienced the power of "intercessory" prayer in a miraculous way. A situation in my life that was looked upon as "hopeless" in the tangible world, was answered in a simply magnificent and surprising way after dedicated, focused prayer. It was nothing less than spectacular and certainly not a "man-made" answer to my problem.

I pray everyday in different ways. Sometimes I pinpoint prayer to a situation in my life that needs intercession, sometimes I just pray a prayer of gratitude and blessings and sometimes I just talk one-on-one to God.
