Someone making that wage will probably keep most of their money - probably 85% to 90%.

At 85%, 40 hours a week would net $1,067 per month. You can rent a room in most places for under $500 per month which would leave you more than $500 for food and other expenses.

Many states have a higher minimum wage. California is $8.00 per hour....
With CA minimum wage at $8, that comes to $1280 a month. Here in the Bay Area, that will rent you a studio apt and, if you're lucky, leave you with maybe $200 a month to buy food, clothes, bus fare, etc. You try living like that some time. It's not easy.

There are lots of cities in California that have room rentals for under $500 per month, even in some of the nicer parts of Orange County. You should be able to survive nicely on minimum wage if you don't have any other expenses besides rent, food and a bus pass.

Notice that I did say survive. You won't have much left over for any extras.

And here I was thinking that Jesus wanted us to live ("I am come that they might have life, and that they might have that more abundantly") rather than just survive.

Yes, but look at what they NET. $5 an hour, net. And that's in a state with no state tax.

But whoever has the world's goods, and beholds his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him? 1 John 3:17

He who gives to the poor will never want, but he who shuts his eyes will have many curses. Proverbs 28:27

Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” Matthew 19:21 ESV

Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common. ... There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold and laid it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. Acts 4:32-35 ESV

"When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. You shall not strip your vineyard bare, or gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the alien: I am the LORD your God". Leviticus 19:9-10

Don't forget this one:

Eze 16:49

Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

This comes near the end of a long dissertation on the sins of Jerusalem, in which the Prophet accuses Jerusalem of being WORSE than Sodom. It was a condemenation of what they'd failed to do COLLECTIVELY, not individually.

And, what was the result for Jerusalem? Destruction and captivity.

So..go ahead. Ignore the poor, don't feed the hungry, and see what happens to this country.

Or maybe you're simply misunderstanding it. No one's accusing you of being too "simple" to understand it, so don't generalize all dissenters as having unwarranted complaints regarding your interpretation.

Mar 10:15 - Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.
Perfect example of misunderstanding it. It means receiving the kingdom like a child would receive the kingdom, it's not limiting people to only receiving it as a kingdom.

It would be advantageous if you read a Bible with footnotes.

If food banks and soup kitchens aren't 'supported biblically' does that automatically make them bad or wrong? Are they forbidden in the bible?
If you don't like them...dont contribute to them,i'll continue to help out at my churches food bank.....those who don't wish to can sleep in or stay home and watch cartoons...or try to start silly fights on the internet.

This is the part of the thread where someone makes a very good counter argument to the terrible and idiotic suggestions made by the OP and the OP never returns to thread. It came early this time!

Let's just hope someone doesn't start making lists of modern-day activities that "aren't supported Biblically."
