2Th 3:8 - Neither did we eat any man's bread for nought; but wrought with labour and travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you: 2Th 3:9 - Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves anensampleuntoyou to follow us. 2Th 3:10 - For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.

Deu 24:22 - And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt: therefore I command thee to do this thing.
Even the old Testament teaches us that those in need had to go to the field and work to collect it for their own consumption.
.... trust this - I have heard most all of the weak excuses as to why I am supposedly wrong
I say the way it is now has brought on the "JUST US" problem instead of JUSTICE!
... and if you think I am wrong because this understanding is too simplistic consider this verse in Mark:
Mar 10:15 - Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.
You seem to have overlooked a few relevant verses:
"Feed the hungry! Help those in trouble! Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you shall be as bright as day. And the Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy you with all good things, and keep you healthy too; and you will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring.Isaiah 58:10-11
But whoever has the world's goods, and beholds his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him?1 John 3:17
He who gives to the poor will never want, but he who shuts his eyes will have many curses.Proverbs 28:27
And the crowds asked [John the Baptist], "What then should we do?" In reply he said to them, "Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise."Luke 3:10-11
Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” Matthew 19:21 ESV
Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common. ... There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold and laid it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need.Acts 4:32-35 ESV
"When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. You shall not strip your vineyard bare, or gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the alien: I am the LORD your God".Leviticus 19:9-10
$5 an hour doesn't get you much. It doesn't even get you a room for the night.
The Federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour - What is the minimum wage? (http://www.dol.gov/elaws/faq/esa/flsa/001.htm - broken link)
Someone making that wage will probably keep most of their money - probably 85% to 90%.
At 85%, 40 hours a week would net $1,067 per month. You can rent a room in most places for under $500 per month which would leave you more than $500 for food and other expenses.
Many states have a higher minimum wage. California is $8.00 per hour....
