If people are on this earth to learn and grow in character and love, why is there a need for a hell fire as described in the bible? What purpose, other than fear, does it serve to torment someone in fire forever and ever? Why not just eradicate their existence and be through with it? Burning them forever and ever won't help them grow in character, so what's the use?

Is this hell fire doctrine really a justified form of justice? How can it be justified for a human being, no matter how much evil he/she's done on earth, how can it be justified that he will burn and burn forever eventhough he's only lived to the age of 90 or less?

God made you.
God made the world.
God created everything.
God knows all.
God sees all.
God made the devil to tempt us. God intentionally created an angel that he knew would betray him.
Then God Created hell so this evil being could have a place to stay.
God could have chosen not to do this. He chose to do so.
Because he loves you. Because, hey, why not.

Some people follow God out of love. Some people follow from fear. That's why you need hell and a devil in the Bible. It motivates people to do the right thing.

Fire ... water ... meteors ... blinding light ... buried under tons of dirt ... being completely alone? In any case, one will be separated from God for eternity. That is really what hell is about.

Unfortunately for most Christians, the idea of a fire and brimstone filled Hell does not originate in the Judeo-Christian-Islam tradition, but under the theories of Zoroaster and the Ancient Egyptian religion.

There is a need for "Hell Fire" so preachers out there can make a lot of money scaring the crap out of less educated, gullible people who are scared of death.

And isn't that what all religion is about? Being less afraid of death?

How else would those Megachurch Preachers be able to afford their lavish lifestyles if they couldn't manipulate gullible, frightened people into believing in Hell?

Hell is one of the most sick, twisted, downright EVIL doctrines ever concocted. There is NO moral or ethical justification for such a demented idea. If somehow god were to be prove real, and it was the god of the bible, and hell was confirmed to exist, then I would make double sure to NEVER worship god. A god who would sentence vast swaths of humanity to suffer in such a horrible state simply because they refused to bow down to him is no god at all and worthy of no praise.

Yes I think the concept of hell was created for a few reasons, including to instill fear in people. I could name a few reasons but due to time constraints I can focus on one for an example.

Religion was often used to rally a people against an enemy. In the bible we can see the OT where god talks of specific people that need to be fought, wiped out, battled or otherwise killed.

Making specific calls to violence and war does not look good though. Hell I think is more insidious in how it can promote a person or a people to violence.

Imagine for example if you walked into a room and found your daughter being tortured and raped. Your reaction is likely to be swift and is unlikely to be limited to the proportions required simply to prevent further rape and torture. You are likely to react disproportionately in order to make sure the perpetrator us unlikely… or even unable… to do such things again.

Yet the concept many have of hell essentially leave a nice afternoon of rape and torture seem like a welcome break.

So imagine how the believer reacts to the unbeliever, the heathen or the purveyor of false gods. One no longer has to specifically call for violence against another person or people. One must simply instill in the heads that the very existence of such a person or people, and their words, are a threat to the eternal souls of you and/or your loved ones. Violence and/or Hatred can then just come about by themselves without you being seen to specifically call for it.

If you would react swiftly and disproportionately to a simple rape… imagine the potential for reaction to the threat on the eternal unending tormented soul of your dearest loved ones. This is what is scarey about the type of extremist cutting the heads off the infidels on camera to broadcast to the west. It is easy, and comforting, to dismiss their actions as those of mad men. However when you explore it you find that those actions are very sane and reasonable.... given the context of what they believe while doing them.... and the threat that the infidel poses to the eternal souls of their loved ones, children, wives, family, friends and more. If I genuinely believed a type of person in this world could put at risk the eternal tormented soul of those I love dearest... Id likely start cutting off a few heads too.

So I think belief in hell is… among a few other things… a longing for justice (a lot of people need to believe it because they cant stand the idea that the evil amongst us often get away unpunished in this life)…. And a tool used to cajole people into believing in god (take pascals wager alone to rest that case)… but I also think some of its uses are more insidious and devious than that and it can also be a tool to motivate people to hatred and even violence to the “outsider” when required without having to be explicit in your commands to go and have at them.

We are created with an immortal soul and like it or not we will exist for eternity. It is by our own choice we decide how we will spend eternity. No person will unjustly and without deserving it spend eternity in Hellfire.
