That's a typical exhortation from the evangelical right wing of the Republican Party. They've gotten a lot of mileage out of their call to pray in order to "save" America from God's judgment, which somehow involves liberals, progressives, left-wingers, Socialist's, Democrat's and Barack Obama. It's designed to elicit an emotional response from so-called "values voters," as if that has anything to do with how government is run or the Constitution. Around here, there are signs pointing to II Chron 7:14 all over the place. There probably are in your neighborhoods too.
But, here's something they always fail to point out.
Yes, prayer and fasting does work, but will it prevent God's judgment? According to the verse they like to quote...maybe. It depends upon who's doing it.
Here's II Chron. 7-14:
2Ch 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
Forget all that other stuff about humbling themselves, praying, seeking His face and turning from their wicked ways for a moment and concentrate on just who God said has to do this in order for Him to delay or cancel His judgment. Notice the words I emboldened.
Who are "my people, which are called by my name?"
During the time this verse was written, it was the Jews, God's Chosen People. But, today under the New Covenant, it's Christian's because we are joint heirs with the Jews to the promises made to Abraham, Issac and Jacob! WE are now God's people, called by His name!
In other words, if America is in trouble, if it has the sword of God's judgment dangling over it's head (and I think it does), it's not the sinners, homosexuals, liberals or any of the usual suspects who are the problem. Neither are their prayers the solution.
It's THE CHURCH which is the problem and THE CHURCH which is the solution! It's those very people calling for prayer and quoting II Chron. 7:14 who need to humble themselves AND pray AND seek His face AND turn from our wicked ways.
Maybe a good place to start would be to quit using Jesus Christ as a decoy, quit hiding behind God as a cover for our wickedness, stop trying co-opt the King of King's and Lord of Lord's into the Republican Party!
He keeps it up and he may find he hasn't a prayer of getting re-elected.
That's sorta what I was thinking. His position seems polarized now more than ever. For his sake I hope as his genesis continues to unfold he does'nt become branded a whack job/flake.
Geez, the guy does not even know how to properly knot his tie. I'd be ashamed to be seen in public with a knot like that.
