and as soon as you step into a public discussion making comments based on a belief, that belief becomes part of the discussion as well.

The question is still unanswered. It's not whether or not God cares for me NOW, it's whether or not he wanted my father to remarry.
If He didn't want him to remarry, I think we can assume that he also didn't want him to father children, right?

My father was killed suddenly. Did he have time to repent and ask forgiveness for marrying my mother? Very unlikely that those would have been his last thoughts. He may have a little time, I like to think that he would have thought about his little four month old baby daughter instead of repenting of his second marriage.
If we lay down rules according to what we thing the scriptures are, I think we are trying to make those rules fit OUR ideas of what God will or won't do.

Hi, Padgett- This is my last response for today, cause I have to run to work but here:
God dictated that divorce and remarriage was a wrong. But he also knew who would follow that law and who would not. He is capable and often does draw good out of situations, occurrences and circumstances that break his law. He drew good out of your father's choice: you and your children and grand children.
You are all part of his creation that he wants on this earth.
You are right about laying down rules according to what we think the scriptures are. Many people fit the scripture to their own way of life and to their ideas of what God will or won't do. The divorce and remarriage "rule" though is not one I fit to my way of life (in fact I find it rather inconvenient to human nature at times, but anyway) I quote from the Latin Vulgate "Douay-Rheims Bible": "And whosoever shall put away his wife...and marry another, committeth adultery."

This is what I was also fishing for in my questions to ILNC. You have people that say the book is absolute, others who pick and choose which parts are worth following. I'm curious about that thought process. Your rationale makes sense.

Think of how it was before you were born. That's what eternity is like.

There is a Zen meditation practice where one can actually get to the point where they can totally empty the mind of all thought. Your thinking stops. It is like being in a state of suspended animation. In reading your quesiton, it reminded me of that...
(P.S. And it is wonderfully peaceful, I might add...)

Those obsessed with eternity would do better to enjoy the here and now.
Animals don't come back, why should you? Some animals live more noble and ethical lives than some humans do.
Why is everything in the future or the past?
God talked it up a lot in the past. No one ever described his voice. If God talked to me, I'd tape record him.
Always in the past, always in the future, but never in the present!
Just that huge carrot hanging over your head based on the words of other people. You might as well believe in Odin, Thor, Baal, Zeus, Vishnu, or any other god. How come only the desert gods are still revered? Like they deserve any kind of revering or worshipping, for all the trouble they cause.
