Give me a break. You think that teacher routinely suspends students who speak out of turn ? You think a principal often overturns a teacher's decision ? This is simple. The teacher overreacted to the student's unpopular, offensive to some, opinion.

what I read was he got ISS (sent out of class), which kids routinely given for having side-conversations and then arguing with the teacher.
Obviously the principle was concerned about Republican Christian biases and how they could get him and the school in trouble since they often run their mouths without all the facts straight.
Interesting suggestion and perhaps you are right. I think it's person's right to state some (racial) prejudices without fear of retaliation for example, preferences in the family like no racial mixing etc.

kids shouldn't be commenting with each other over the teachers trying to teach, especially not about the religionist reasons for why the kids enjoy persecuting and looking down on others.
supposedly, while teaching about Germany, one student began asking the teacher what German's thought about homosexuality back in the day, then another asked how to say "lesbian" in German, then little 14 yr-old jock suddenly turned around and began a whispered and not-loud-enough for the teacher to think it disruptive, side-conversation with his class-mate about how homosexuals were just plain wrong, simply on the grounds that Christianity (as he sees it) is true, implying that there is nothing else stopping him from being a homosexual.

According to a statement from Liberty Counsel, one student asked what Germans thought about homosexuality in relation to religion. Another student asked to hear the German translation of "lesbian." It's too bad fox is the only propaganda machine working on the story, we need a real news organization to actually give us some reliable details that don't just have us needlessly criticizing the decision of our teachers... who are worth more than our pastors and other cult-leaders.
Run their mouths and spread gossip... its all good, when you do it in the name of your country, politics, or god.

Look, if teachers 'routinely' issued suspensions for side conversations and brief comments to friends, classes would be half-empty.
The bottom line is we don't have any facts about the incident whatsoever. So, there is no need to go on discussing who is wrong or right for what they did because the fact of the matter is we don't know what happened or what anyone did. All we know is we have some very poor reporting.
We only have one side of the story folks. One from a kid who got in trouble and may be trying to spin the story such that he looks like the victim. We don't know that he was not disrupting class, because that claim only comes from him, even though the news agency reported that as an established fact (again poor reporting which I have come to expect from that news organization). The statements from his mom and lawyer and based on the boy's story to them.
So, there is no need to get all up in arms until we get facts about the incident; not just a one-sided account from a teen who got in trouble. I bet some of his classmates are probably tweeting and Facebook messaging about the incident since it made the news. If we could only have a separate account of what happened...

It's always difficult to decide where free speech becomes unacceptable.
If he was commenting only to his friend behind him, as he stated in the report, he was not engaged in classroom discussion but in a behavior which disrupts class.

Did the teacher overreact? If the narrative given is accurate, yes. Should the student be punished? Who knows.
School boards have gone off the deep end in regulating all kinds of school behaviors lately (at the demand of parents) so if a behavior fits into a matrix for punishment there usually is no alternative to imposing it. Add to the mix that an awful lot of regulations are really poorly written/vague and this type of thing happens daily in schools across the country.
