I'm not forcing anyone to think the same way as me (They know it's true but try to be ignorant) but they should respect the holiday.
Most people do - they just don't respect it in exactly the way you wish they would. Stop being such a control freak. There's no way what someone else believes about a holiday should have you so shook up. What's really the issue here? Do you feel powerless in your personal life and are acting out, or what?
Please read it before saying it's a secular/pegan holiday!
Actually, it would have been a good idea for you to read the entire articlebefore posting the link! The article goes into a fair amount of detail about the pre-Christian roots of the Christian Christmas. There are a large number of pre- and non-Christian celebrations around the Winter Solstice, including some on December 25th.
I'm not saying that December 25th is ONLY a secular/pagan holiday; not at all. I'm saying that the Season (third and fourth week of December) contains a number of OTHER celebrations in addition to Christmas.
There IS a strong minhag to avoid unnessary work on chol hamoed Pesach and Sukkot, IIUC.
I guess it does not apply to Hannukah. However the minhag America is to spend at least some time at home with the family on Hannukah. Perhaps a foolish minhag, but there it is.
christmas is a christian holiday that has roots in a roman era pagan holiday. Over the years its practices include some things from Rome, some christian practices, and some additional borrowings from non-Roman winter holidays. There are other winter solstice period holidays in other traditions some of whose only relationship to christmas is the time of year.
OK, fair enough. From what I've seen, especially recently, nativity scenes are usually reserved for the front lawns of churches and such. I see VERY few private homes with nativity scenes displayed. Maybe that's just me.
