This belief is shared among Buddhists and Hindus, but Christians and other faiths may have a difficulty in believing in this concept. I gather from the previous posts that when humans die they await Final Judgement as spirits in their graves. It appears that nobody can be reborn as angels or gods until the Final Judgement.
Regarding cross species rebirths it is note worthy to highlight a story told by the Buddha in this context.
One day while the Buddha was about to enter a city with his retinue of monks he saw a swine meddling in the dirt in search for food. When the Buddha smiled Ananda noticed it and asked the Buddha for the reason as the Buddha did not express emotions unnecessarily.
The Buddha replied that the swine they saw was once a Brahma god who was reborn as a swine now. He explained that when good Kamma that had resulted him to reborn as a Brahma, exhausted he was reborn as a human and now as a swine as a result of his bad Kamma during his life as a human.
This story may be the evidence of cross-species reincarnation if one believes in the words of the Buddha; if one can accept the existence of the historical Buddha and that he had never ever told a lie.
