A 28 point "purity pledge" republicans in one country are trying to coerce all republican candidates to sign.
Quote:
You must oppose abortion, in any circumstances.
You must uphold the right to have guns, all kinds of guns.
You must endorse the idea of a balanced state and federal budget, whatever it takes, even if your primary responsibility is to be sure the county budget is balanced.
You must favor, and live up to, abstinence before marriage.
You must be faithful to your spouse.Your spouse cannot be a person of the same gender, and you are not allowed to favor any government action that would allow for civil unions of people of the same sex.
You cannot now, from the moment you sign this pledge, look at pornography.
Interesting. Really, the only one that I really disagree with is the same sex marriage clause. And I would also say that a ban on pre-marital sex is pretty futile, even if preferable.
The problem with this arises (to me) when trying to have every party member agree on all of these issues. It seems that they are trying to destroy debate within the party over these issues, when debate can lead to compromise and solution. I think this is one more reason that Republicans are screwed this year.
Of course this one coming from a republician is laughable.
Remember when Newt (a fitting name) was getting hysterical in his attempt to impeach Clinton over not being faithful to his wife, yet at the very same time was cheating on wife #2.

Ted Foley, republican congressman hitting on male pages.
Larry Craig, republican senator that solicited an undercover male cop for sex in an airport restroom.
Bob Allen, FL House member (R), offered $20 to an undercover cop for a BJ, in a park restroom.
Glenn Murphy Jr., National Chairman of the Young Republicans got a guy drunk then attempted oral resuscitation, though about 3 feet too low.
More laughable than wrong (look down), and a wee bit hypocritical. There are nothing political about this, it's all withing the party, but sure reeks of the fundy mindset in the bible belt.
