That is a very good point.....(reppp) ....as appeal to authority can be inappropriate if they pontificate about matters which they know nothing about. Also we can get false appeal in which someone is help up as an authority in areas where they would never claim any expertise or authority and of course authorities can be represented as holding views which they do not actually hold. Notably
Einstein believed in God (he believed in an intelligently ordered universe but did not believe in a persona god or in any religion)
Hitler was an atheist (he certainly believed in divine power which had a plan for him and everyone else, but he had no time for religion as such)
Flew converted. (he certainly became convinced by ID argument, but he never adopted a belief in a personal god, let alone any religion)
Many smart, intellectual and learned men were Christian believers. If you reject christianity, you are effectually rejecting these men's views which were very well thought out throughout history.
Even smart, intellectual and learned men and women, depending on the era in which they lived, were confronted by what seemed like mysterious and incomprehensible natural phenomenon which belief in god helped to explain. Even now when many of these phenomenon have been examined and given a scientific basis they still do not explain everything, nor do they provide the psychic comfort that religion can provide even the most intellectual and learned among us. For many there is just a need to believe in something god like. That doesn't make them less smart, or any less intelligent and certainly doesn't provide a rational reason to reject their secular views and intellectual achievements.
99% of Presidents are/were Christians, and it's extremely hard to become a president in the U.S., so there you go (One example out of 1 billion).
I think a more correct way to say it is that all the Presidents (so far) have SAID they were Christians. It's a long way to change Washington and Jefferson from Deists into Christians. There are others, but nobody ever ran for the Presidency claiming other that religious views.

I doubt that a self proclaimed atheist could even get nominated, much less be elected president, and the reason for this is because of Christian prejudice and bigotry towards atheists...Atheist are the least trusted group of people in the US, with homosexuals running second....This situation is temporary though because non belief is also the fastest growing demographic...

Yeah, as if anyone who WASN"T Christian would even have a chance at being elected. They said they were Christian, but were they really? Who knows. Many think that Obama is a closet Atheist.
Since atheists are supposed to be a very small minority of a predominantly Christian USA, where would you suppose the money is?
