It was bound to be attempted. Let's wait and see if it actually happens.
I'll bet that the guy that thought it might be fun to see what happened if you mated a horse and a donkey had to listen to a lot of flack before the first mule was born. What does the bible say about that sort of mixing?

I'd actually be more interested to see that if the creature evolved what it might eventually "think" as to it's basic origins
First, they will have to figure out how to know when a bacterium is thinking.
hmmmmm, then maybe we could use the technique to figure out thought among humans.
No I'm talking about the bacteria evolving into something that could express itself in rational thought. I wonder if it would have the notion of something greater?? Or, perhaps, if we sent the darn microbe to a planet with similar characteristics as Earth, we could check in on the planet every so often and monitor how well it's evolving... maybe that's why we have UFO's
What they're talking about doing is very interesting but at the same time it could be potentially dangerous. It's inevitable that scientists are going to start playing around with genetics and create new organisms but the results could be very unpredictable. It may be helpful for one particular problem like global warming if a microbe is capable of using up carbon dioxide but the interactions between living things are almost infinitely complex and there could be completely unexpected results that could wreak havoc in ways they've never considered. It's worth exploring but there need to be safeguards and restrictions as well.
