I can't help you with a theological answer, except that I suggest Matthew saw this as evidence that the Last days (which predicted the rising of the dead) had come about at the expiry of Jesus at the crucifixion.
I can perhaps help with a textual criticism response which is that it evidently isn't true.
Oh Yes That happen alright....In the Bible from Matthew 27: 50-54......``Jesus of the cross, cried again with a loud voice, and a veil of the temple was ripped from the top to the bottom, and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent...And the graves were opened, and many bodies of the saints which slept arose...And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went to the holy city, and appeared to many...Now when the centurion and they that were with him watching Jesus , saw the earth quake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly , saying `Truly this was the Son of God ...``...... These saints who were in the grave where released from the bosom of Abraham , where God keep the blessed people awaiting the deliverer Lord Jesus to fulfill the plan of redemption ....

Gosh, you would have thought that an event like that would have gotten bigger headlines than just some scrap of papyrus.
You know, like carved in pillars of stone all over the region.
At the crucifixion the Earth is supposed to have opened up , and the dead to have walked the Earth.
Is there any other textual, historical evidence for this , anecdotes even?
because aside from the Bible I have never heard this mentioned in any other books, whether religious, philosophy, history , literature etc..
why is this?
RESPONSE:
Do you know how to tell the difference between historical fact and fiction in scripture?
This one is purely fiction.
The Jews in Jerusalem when this is supposed to have happened left no records. The Roman garrison stationed n Jerusalem left no records, even the Evangelist who wrote the other gospels left no record. Simple conclusion, isn't it?
And of course the interesting thing is that Matthew wrote in the very next chapter that Jesus was raised from the dead too. What might this suggest?
