Why did Stalin persecute and murder Christians, as well as destroying churches and cathedrals, and shutting down thousands of them?
Because he loved this life and the Christians, if faithful to God, did not. when you get Herodias and John the Baptist, their paths cross very quickly...

Sadly, it is often forgotten about it.

Cathedral of Christ the Saviour - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Huge Cathedral being destroyed in USSR 1931.
It is all about power. The Russian Orthodox Church was and still is one the biggest institutions on Earth. Second only to Catholicism.

Stalin was Hungry for power, his biggest obstacle was the Russian Orthodox Church. It was a battle between theocracy and communism. Nearly every Christian killed under Stalin was Russian Orthodox.

Which presents a bit of a paradox as it seems that many who are outraged by the Persecution of Christians by Stalin do not recognize Russian Orthodox as being christian as their Doctrines, Dogmas, Canons and Rituals are identical with Catholicism except for who the pope is: The Bishop of Rome vs the Bishop of Moscow..

Stalin wasn't a "true atheist ".
That argument seems to work for all of the horrible acts done by Christians and in the name of their, and other peoples, gods. Why can't I decide that all bad atheists aren't true atheists?

People are people. our garments are like filthy rags, satan is a powerful evil force that moves its hands throughout this sinful nature world. So be it theist or atheist anyone is capable of doing horrific things. Sin is an ugly thing that's why we need a Savior.

True, but atheists never admit what evil they have done throughout the history, both past and present, especially when they get into power and have "free speech" to do it. They abuse their "free speech".

When you start threads like this, they switch the subject and turns it into asking why Christians did this and that

How Hitler's Nazi propaganda machine tried to take Christ out of Christmas | Mail Online

^ Read the article.

With regards to Hitler's speech that "Hally" quoted with an agenda. I don't see Jesus mentioned anywhere in that speech. Also if Hitler was a Christian Catholic as per Hally's assumptions I don't think he would kill Christians and Catholic priests. Hally's post demonstrates very poorly of her character and it's sad that Hally has taken the pains to show how shallow she is.

Some of Hitler's quotes:The book Hitler's Secret Conversations states the following:

Night of 11th-12th July, 1941
"National Socialism and religion cannot exist together....
"The heaviest blow that ever struck humanity was the coming of Christianity. Bolshevism is Christianity's illegitimate child. Both are inventions of the Jew. The deliberate lie in the matter of religion was introduced into the world by Christianity.... "Let it not be said that Christianity brought man the life of the soul, for that evolution was in the natural order of things." (p 6 & 7)

10th October, 1941, midday
"Christianity is a rebellion against natural law, a protest against nature. Taken to its logical extreme, Christianity would mean the systematic cultivation of the human failure." (p 43)

14th October, 1941, midday
"The best thing is to let Christianity die a natural death.... When understanding of the universe has become widespread... Christian doctrine will be convicted of absurdity.... "Christianity has reached the peak of absurdity.... And that's why someday its structure will collapse.... "...the only way to get rid of Christianity is to allow it to die little by little...."Christianity <is> the liar.... "We'll see to it that the Churches cannot spread abroad teachings in conflict with the interests of the State." (p 49-52)

19th October, 1941, night
"The reason why the ancient world was so pure, light and serene was that it knew nothing of the two great scourges: the pox and Christianity."

21st October, 1941, midday
"Originally, Christianity was merely an incarnation of Bolshevism, the destroyer.... "The decisive falsification of Jesus' <who he asserts many times was never a Jew> doctrine was the work of St.Paul. He gave himself to this work... for the purposes of personal exploitation....
"Didn't the world see, carried on right into the Middle Ages, the same old system of martyrs, tortures, *******? Of old, it was in the name of Christianity. Today, it's in the name of Bolshevism. Yesterday the instigator was Saul: the instigator today, Mardochai. Saul was changed into St.Paul, and Mardochai into Karl Marx. By exterminating this pest, we shall do humanity a service of which our soldiers can have no idea." (p 63-65)

13th December, 1941, midnight
"Christianity is an invention of sick brains: one could imagine nothing more senseless, nor any more indecent way of turning the idea of the Godhead into a mockery.... <here insults people who believe transubstantiation>....
"When all is said, we have no reason to wish that the Italians and Spaniards should free themselves from the drug of Christianity. Let's be the only people who are immunised against the disease." (p 118-119)

14th December, 1941, midday
"Kerrl, with noblest of intentions, wanted to attempt a synthesis between National Socialism and Christianity. I don't believe the thing's possible, and I see the obstacle in Christianity itself....
"Pure Christianity-- the Christianity of the catacombs-- is concerned with translating Christian doctrine into facts. It leads quite simply to the annihilation of mankind. It is merely whole-hearted Bolshevism, under a tinsel of metaphysics." (p 119 & 120)

9th April, 1942, dinner
"There is something very unhealthy about Christianity." (p 339)

27th February, 1942, midday
"It would always be disagreeable for me to go down to posterity as a man who made concessions in this field. I realize that man, in his imperfection, can commit innumerable errors-- but to devote myself deliberately to errors, that is something I cannot do. I shall never come personally to terms with the Christian lie."
"Our epoch in the next 200 years will certainly see the end of the disease of Christianity.... My regret will have been that I couldn't... behold <its demise>." (p 278

Lutzer noted, “Hitler spoke of both Protestants and Catholics with contempt... : ‘Do you really believe the masses will be Christian again? Nonsense! Never again. That tale is finished. No one will listen to it again. But we can hasten matters. The parsons will dig their own graves. They will betray their God to us. They will betray anything for the sake of their miserable jobs and incomes’” (1995, p. 104).

Hitler’s references to God and the ritualistic pageantry of Nazism were pagan. Earthly symbols of German valour and Teutonic strength were to be worshipped - not the forgiving, compassionate representative of an “Eastern Mediterranean servant ethic imposed on credulous ancient Germans by force and subterfuge” (the phrase is Burleigh’s own, in Michael Burleigh, The Third Reich: a New History, Pan, 2001). A Hitler Youth marching song (Grunberger, A Social History) illustrates it:

We follow not Christ, but Horst Wessel,
Away with incense and Holy Water,
The Church can go hang for all we care,
The Swastika brings salvation on Earth.
(Horst Wessel was an early Nazi party Sturmabteilung street-fighter murdered by communists and turned into a martyr by propaganda chief Josef Goebbels.)

Some 4000 Protestant ministers, led by Karl Barth and Hans Asmussen, formed the Confessing Church, which at Barmen in 1934 declared that no human Fuhrer could stand above the Word of God. The Confessing Church lost its properties, its seminary was suppressed, its journals were prohibited, & when war came the members of its clergy of military age and not in prison were assigned to positions of greatest danger, while the older leaders were sent to concentration camps. Among them was Martin Niemoller, a Lutheran pastor who after more than half a year in solitary confinement was brought to trial under Hitler's law against "treacherous attacks upon state and party." His refusal to capitulate and his persistent resistance to Nazism made him the symbolic figure of the Protestant opposition until the downfall of the Nazis.

Cochrane had magnified the significance of affirming that "by January 15, 1934, there were 7,036 members" of the Pastor's Emergency League, organized by Martin Niemoller, the courageous Berlin pastor. Cochrane added in "spite of heavy losses and in spite of the imprisonment of its founder on July 1,1937, the League was never dissolved or banned, and it rendered service until as late as Christmas, 1944

Dachau concentration camp held the over 2400 Catholic priests. Over 1/3 of the priests in Dachau alone were killed (Lenz, 2004). One Dachau survivor, Fr. Johannes Lenz, wrote an account. He claimed that the Catholic Church was the only steadfast fighter against the Nazis. Lenz tells the agony & martyrdom of the physical and mental tortures Dachau inmates experienced. Men & women were murdered by the thousands in Dachau, & those who survived were considered “missionaries in Hell.” The fact is, official Nazi works taught both anti-Semitic & anti-Christian doctrines:

“If one believes the anti-Semitic, one should also believe the anti-Christian, for both had a single purpose. Hitler’s aim was to eradicate all religious organizations within the state and to foster a return to paganism” (Dimont, 1994, p. 397).

UPI report on Nazi vs. Christian conflict (found at Analysis: Nazis vs. Christians)
"By Uwe Siemon-Netto,UPI Religion Correspondent
Published 1/14/2002 8:46 PM

WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- The daughter of Hitler's foremost German foe reacted with satisfaction Monday to the news that a Holocaust survivor's granddaughter has drawn attention to a rarely mentioned historical fact: The Nazis planned to destroy Christianity in Germany & beyond.

"This is what my father had been saying since 1937," said Marianne Meyer-Krahmer, daughter of Carl Goerdeler, who was hanged in early 1945 for his leading role in the attempt to overthrow Hitler's regime.
His family, daughter Marianne included, wound up in a concentration camp and shackled to their beds every night, she recalled in a telephone call from Heidelberg.
Goerdeler, the former mayor of Leipzig, would have become German chancellor in a democratic government, had one of the 30-odd coup attempts against the fuhrer succeeded.

Who is this "they" you're talking about? That's a faulty guilt by assocation. I'm an atheist because I see no credible evidence of the existence of God - anymore than I see credible evidence of Santa Claus or the tooth fairy.

What Stalin did or didn't do is one for the history books. It has nothing to do with my belief about God or religion.
