the bible claimed that it is God allowed Cyrus to allow the jews to retuen home and rebuilt their temple. history and archaeology disputes that. Cyrus allowing the people in his empire to return home, rebuild their countries, temples of lives. the cylinder never mentions jews, judah and jerusalem
Cyrus may have seen Jerusalem, situated in a strategic location between Mesopotamia and Egypt, as worth patronising for political reasons. His Achaemenid successors generally supported indigenous cults in subject territories as an expression of their legitimacy as rulers, thereby currying favour with the cults' devotees.
The book of Daniel mentioned Medo-persia. the median empire was overthrown by Cyrus who established the Achaeminid Empire or Persian Empire
You are right, electro - this is about the unreliability of the Bible demonstrated by its failure to mention a lot of history that it should. Proving it 'true' through the back door of personal conviction is off -topic, as you say, as well as brickdust.
The way it looks (to me, I have to say) is that it describes the middle -eastern world of the Iron age. The Philistines have arrived and settled in Gaza. The old Bronze age states that exchanged letters with Akhenaten are gone and replaced by Moab, Ammon and edom - which the bible appears to tell us were the first states in that area after the Flood.
True, it mentions Ur - one of the earliest Sumerian cities. But it is the Ur of the Chaldeans - an Ur of great antiquity, but an antiquity of which the Bible knows nothing.

Why "should" it mention it, AREQUIPA?
The way I see it is, if God were to put ALL of history or according to you, what it "should" mention in the Bible, then that would detract from the overall message. The Bible is written first and foremost, for Christ. The history included in it is just a by-product of everything surrounding the prophets and the ushering in, of the Messiah.

jdaelectro is correct. Why should the Bible record EVERYTHING that ever happened in human history?
It never recorded Adam or Moses, or any of the ones mentioned in the New Testament taking a crap, picking their nose or brushing their teeth either. But that should not cause one to imagine the Bible is unreliable due to this.
The Bible is primarily a religious book. For Christians the Old Testament is primarily about the faith journey of the Jewish people.
Also history, back then, was often a story and fairly often a story with a moral or point. Tacitus, I think, comes close to what we'd think of as objective history but generally that wasn't the point. In that sense the OT may fit as "ancient-style history" with the Old Testament being as said the story of the Jewish people told in a way to make moral points. You don't give a sufficiently compelling reason why "the story of the Jewish people" needs to get into the internal affairs of Egypt or Persia.
I think many of the skeptics criticisms involve criticizing the Bible, often the Old Testament, for not being things it doesn't claim to be. In fairness part of this is because many Fundamentalists also claim the Bible is something it isn't. It's not a replacement for all science books. It's not all a literal-minded document. Some of it is clearly allegorical, some parts historical, some visionary, etc. Skeptics though are at fault for thinking either that Fundamentalism is Christianity or that it's the most "true" Christianity. In reality Fundamentalism is largely a product of nineteenth century debates within mostly "low church" Protestantism.
The largest form of Christianity is still Catholic. The most ancient are Catholic, Orthodox, "Oriental Orthodox", and Assyrian. The longest-lasting in Protestantism is probably Lutherans, Moravians, and Waldensians. (Although the last merged with Presbyterians I think) Other than certain branches of Lutheranism I don't think any of these are Fundamentalist.

If it is as claimed, why shouldn't it contain everything that ever happened?
It is allegedly "the word of god" who causes everything in the universe to happen. It is not as if this "god" did not have time (always has hand always will exist) or ran out of paper (he could just create more, like he allegedly did the earth).
You theists tend to put such human limits and motivations on your god. Funny how they always co-incide with your limits and motivations.
