A group of unrelated people showed up about halfway through, there were 6 or 8 of them, all in different cars, one woman in particular seemed ODD. She seemed VERY focused on me, trying to befriend me while at the same time looking very much like a young housewife from the neighborhood. I didn't think much of it other then she was a little too chummy considering I didn't know her.
She asked me questions about things for sale, came inside to view the breakable things laid out on the dining room table. She praised my home, the decorations and asked why I was selling things, was I moving. I explained that through inheritance and my own hoarding, I had alot of things I didn't need. General chit chat.
It was at this point, this woman's agenda became clear too me. She opened her purse and pulled out a pamphlet, she told me she had just picked this up and thought I might like to read over it. It stuck out as REALLY odd considering the circumstances. Here I was, one woman having a garage sale and there were by this time at least 10 people I was trying to keep an eye on.
I looked at the cover, thinking maybe it was some kind of recipe booklet or something, in spite of my experience with this kind of BS, I still didn't see it. She was trying to shove a religious tract into my hands. There was ONE word on the cover that identified it for what it was. No picture or anything else identified it, only the word "worshipping".
I told her "no thank you" and gave it back too her. Had there not been other people there, I would have blasted that woman so badly she would have been in tears. If this kind of manuever was not one of manipulation then I don't know what is.
She gained access to my house under false pretenses, pretended to take interest in my home and family life only to try and hand out her propaganda. I find this kind of disingenuine behavior really shabby and frankly unacceptable. I don't understand how people actually behave like this and don't see the problem with it.
I have a brain, if I am interested in something, I also have the internet and the local library to look things up. The bald faced arrogance of people who inject themselves into our lives with the presumption that THEY alone have something to teach is utterly amazing too me. I swear I'm going to get a shotgun and start meeting these people at the door with it. Maybe it will give them something to cry about at church next time.

I think you should find out where that particular group worships and go and "doorstep" them on their way out of church with Atheist leaflets, maybe some printed excerpts from Dawkins' book !! Give them a taste of their own medicine. See how tolerant they are to those tactics...

I have no idea who comes to my door as far as sect, nor do I care. I work long hours and want my quiet time just that, quiet.
The people who come to my door are american. Rude christian americans. I don't care to know what sect they're from, I just don't want them there.
kaykay, I see that you harbor great distaste for the jehovah's witnesses, imagine how we feel when any christian comes to our doors. Why is it ok for you to do what you don't want others to do to you?

Don't think I haven't thought about it. I was kind of used to the knocks at my door, I never answer the door if its someone I don't know, I just yell through the door and tell them to leave. I was truly taken aback when this woman came into my home though. That is relentless and more then presumptious.
Maybe I should have a sign AND a box full of atheist leaflets on my front door, now that might be fun.

I think a lot of Christians have to realize something. When someone knocks on your door you both are acknowledging the presence of something greater. I refuse to do so and sometimes when I am in a bad mood I'll let them know that. I think that drives them to be even more annoying and intrusive.

I have consistently admitted throughout this thread that yes, if I were an atheist I would probably find it annoying. That said, however, I also understand why some feel that they need to do it. If you believe someone's future well-being, especially their eternal future, is in danger, you are driven to do things you might otherwise forgo. This is not about selling a " product." This is human compassion and caring about someone other than yourself. (As troop observed, some mixture of motives may be occuring but in general, these guys are trying to do the right thing. Otherwise, they could be home watching a ballgame, or something, ya know? )
(And before some irritated Jehovah's Witness on this forum comes after me , let me just say that I don't have a distaste for them, - I simply believe their doctrine to be in the realm of serious error. I, therefore, do not wish to engage in debate (though some do and probably should IMO) about it, nor did I want them attempting to indoctrinate my minor son in their beliefs. Furthermore, I do understand as I said earlier in this thread why they come by. This is part of their beliefs that they should do this, and as much as I disagree with them doctrinally, and they may annoy me personally, I respect the fact that they are doing what they believe to be right.

Laying aside the fact that I am a christian, I have to admit that I am quite taken aback by the reactions I have seen here! If the remarks here are a microcosmic reflection of the world at large, then we live within the confines of a very angry population and that scares me to no end. Are we heading toward a vigilante society where everyone takes the law into their own hands simply because a person doesn't agree with the actions of another? Dear God, I pray this is not the case!!!
I cannot believe that we are that far removed from a time when simple courtesy entailed "thank you", or "no, thank you" when it came to many instances in our every day walk of life. Have we grown so mean-spirited that even a simple knock at the door begats a threat of physical violence? I am almost moved to tears as I write this to think that we can treat one another so cruelly over something that, perhaps in the scheme of life in general, really doesn't amount to a hill of beans. Call me naive, stupid, sentimental, overly dramatic, but I just don't understand it all. Why don't we get angry about something that really matters, like the kids who are getting killed in our streets; innocent people getting murdered in other countries, political leaders who are threatening our very existence, and so many other important issues. Those are situations worth getting angry about.
I'm sorry for going off like I have but I had to get this out of my system. I realize that I may have offended some of you and I apologize in advance, please forgive me. Perhaps I am naive but I long so much for a time past when we treated one another so much better, with love and respect and without disdain for one another and it seems those days have become nothing but a memory.

As much as I agree with you here, I think you have to understand that if you want to start a thread on kids getting killed in the streets or political leaders threatening our existence, you will that people will have plenty of emotion and anger at those atrocities. Fact is this thread is not about that so I'm not sure what your point really is. If there is no doalogue, what is the point of the thread anyway.

I'm sure there are ( try the Atheist society ) or maybe we should just get together and have some printed , starting a new proletysing campaign.

We could become the new missionaries for a new Millenium, preaching reason and logic. A trip to the South Pacific sounds good to me ? Not so keen on the deep south though, it sounds too scary and dangerous ! Anyone with me ? A peaceful crusade to win back some modicum of common sense ?
