Today I had a garage sale, it continues tomorrow. I had a constant flow of VERY interesting people starting at 7am this morning until noon.

A group of unrelated people showed up about halfway through, there were 6 or 8 of them, all in different cars, one woman in particular seemed ODD. She seemed VERY focused on me, trying to befriend me while at the same time looking very much like a young housewife from the neighborhood. I didn't think much of it other then she was a little too chummy considering I didn't know her.

She asked me questions about things for sale, came inside to view the breakable things laid out on the dining room table. She praised my home, the decorations and asked why I was selling things, was I moving. I explained that through inheritance and my own hoarding, I had alot of things I didn't need. General chit chat.

It was at this point, this woman's agenda became clear too me. She opened her purse and pulled out a pamphlet, she told me she had just picked this up and thought I might like to read over it. It stuck out as REALLY odd considering the circumstances. Here I was, one woman having a garage sale and there were by this time at least 10 people I was trying to keep an eye on.

I looked at the cover, thinking maybe it was some kind of recipe booklet or something, in spite of my experience with this kind of BS, I still didn't see it. She was trying to shove a religious tract into my hands. There was ONE word on the cover that identified it for what it was. No picture or anything else identified it, only the word "worshipping".

I told her "no thank you" and gave it back too her. Had there not been other people there, I would have blasted that woman so badly she would have been in tears. If this kind of manuever was not one of manipulation then I don't know what is.

She gained access to my house under false pretenses, pretended to take interest in my home and family life only to try and hand out her propaganda. I find this kind of disingenuine behavior really shabby and frankly unacceptable. I don't understand how people actually behave like this and don't see the problem with it.

I have a brain, if I am interested in something, I also have the internet and the local library to look things up. The bald faced arrogance of people who inject themselves into our lives with the presumption that THEY alone have something to teach is utterly amazing too me. I swear I'm going to get a shotgun and start meeting these people at the door with it. Maybe it will give them something to cry about at church next time.

The moral of the story is: Don't hold garage sales

All joking aside, I understand your point entirely. Something I despise is how people of faith can sometimes stoop to the lowest levels of trickery. Something that bothers me even more is that because they come as "messengers" they feel as if they are untouchable. From the guy at work selling cakes from his church, to situations like the one you describe, it never fails to amaze me how they expect people to just roll over and play along because they come bearing the word of God. This agitates me to no end. I have no issue with those who worship. I have no issue with those who believe there is a God. But, don't put on a mask of kindness or come bearing gifts if those aren't your true intentions.

Well this was my first garage sale EVER and I made $556 the first day and I didn't even sell half of my things. From what I understand from people who are INTO the garage sale scene around here, tomorrow should be even more busy.

Lets hope the bible thumpers stay away. If not then I might have to risk offending some of the shoppers.

Angry Never Ceases to Amaze Me

Hi Lindsay

My 16 year old daughter answered the door the other morning and it was a child around the age of 12 handing out "Watchtower" and asking her if she believed in the Bible!!
We live in St George, which is very mormon. But at least when they knock on our door, its to invite the girls to a party! And we're not LDS!
I was appalled that they would use a child in such a manner!

You know, for $556 I might be able to put up with a little religious banter myself... in fact... it'd almost be like getting paid for giving them a piece of my mind And to think! I've been on this forum for free the whole time!!!

OH, using ones own children to FORCE their agenda is pretty typical. When I was a child being raised in a christian church they did that very thing to us. They sent us around doing ingathering, asking for money and often in very sketchy neighborhoods, believing people would be nicer to children. I recall being escorted out of neighborhoods by the police because they said we were not safe.

I have had them come by here doing the same thing, a parent in the car was at least watching them. It makes me sick frankly. I can't think of an offensive enough sign to keep them off my property.

Wow; this is deep, and sounds like you were pretty angry;
Do you think this lady may have come there with the mildest, loving intentions
and sensed something and tried to witness to you from a different angle? mabye as to not get you angry?
Gee a shotgun would be somewhat extreme don't you think?(sarcasm right?) LOL
What made you most upset the lady and her religion?
Or her approach that seemed deceptive?
Just Curious

"Beware of the Atheist?"

You should watch 'Jesus Camp'. It's an unbelievable documentary of how people are warping the minds of kids to promote their agenda. Quite scary in fact.
