Here's the most scientific answer to the problem, it comes straight the the article itself: "It has been said that in nearly all groups of animals there is at least an indication of a latent ability to hibernate or aestivate. Perhaps these abilities were supernaturally intensified during this period. With their bodily functions reduced to a minimum, the burden of their care would have been greatly lightened."

I put in bold the word that describes the scientific method for the care of these animals. Yep, you guessed it "Supernatural Science" brought to you by God himself. You just can't argue with that line of logic.
