God made the Israelites wander in the desert for 40 years and said that he'd give them a "Promised Land" or a "Land flowing with milk and honey" if they didn't ***** too much. Then he gave them Israel, which is pretty much a ****hole. Weren't they expecting a luscious land of natural resources, like Norway or something?

Considering their god was not real, I guess a sandpit was the best he could come up with.
The Serengeti would have been a far nicer place.

There is plenty of Google Street View coverage of Israel; it's not a great, big sand pit.

It is compared to the Serengeti

There you at least get to see many of the animals alluded to in the bible

(looking puzzled) Israel is a productive land and is no more a wasteland than Southern California is.

Because of modern irrigation. Southern California is also mostly a wasteland without any human intervention.

Maybe because all fairy tales have elements that are beyond belief?

IIRC, most of Israel's potable water comes from desalination plants.

Seems so

Yes, I recall my former fundamentalist masters actually pointing to the modern irrigation-based reclamation of Israel as a fulfillment of a prophecy. Words to the effect that due to god's judgment Israel had become a wasteland but that it would one day be lush again. Typical vague prophecy that could be seen as fulfilled over time pretty much no matter what.

My take? (And PS, God didn't make anyone do anything...)

Because the promised land is within.
It isn't "here"...on earth...it's within inside us...also called the
Kingdom of God or Heaven.

When you know esoteric yogic techniques...then you'll
also know what is meant by the land of milk and honey and
Manna from Heaven.

These techniques are so esoteric not even Paramahansa Yogananda would show anyone
but his inner circle, knowing it was just too much for Westerners.
So he left out a lot when teaching his famous Kriya Yoga to the U.S.
Few masters in India even teach these....they go with silly mantras, chants and austerities.

Sorry, but it pertains to the promised land ... within.
