According to the bible, the flood happened a few thousand years ago and it flooded the whole world. Assuming he took every species of animal in his boat, how did they get back to their islands after the flood? How did the kangeroo go from the Middle East to Australia? Did it build its own boat to make it across the ocean?

Well, I'm not a literalist, but I used to be one...

One of the approaches was to argue that after the flood the continents were a unified mass, essentially like Pangaea. Then 5 extra length generations later, during the time of Peleg, the earth was "divided" according to Genesis 10:12. This is interpreted to mean that the continents were quickly and dramatically formed as this unified landmass broke apart.

There are, of course, a lot of weaknesses and problems with this idea, but it is often used to explain how there are animals on all the various landmasses.

Birds were much bigger back then. They simply carried animals around the world with them.

That is the only explanation that I see from a biblical viewpoint...

I'd like to know how he collected a pair each of the millions of types of bugs that inhabit the Earth some of which are too small to be seen (Viruses), and what about all the plants that presumably died off in the flood,
I think this whole Noah fairy tale is if anything meant to be taken symbolically and not literally, as with almost 9 million species of life on the Earth how would he have had time to collect a mating pair of every one of them or even know if he had a male and female of a particular species..,

Then that blows the entire Biblical story out of the water.(Pun intended)

7 So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.”
