Why Is There a Bible in Every Hotel Room (And How Did it Get There)?
The story has something to do with two traveling businessmen (in 1898) and the Bible Project in 1908 which set out to put a Bible in every hotel room in America.
But why are hotels still maintaining this tradition? Are people reading the Bible in their hotel rooms?
Would you expect to see other religious books in other countries?
I applaud Bibles in hotel rooms. Reading the Bible is the best way to deconstruct Christianity. And nothing says "pathetic" better than being alone with a Bible in a hotel room ;-)
I never understood the whole concept even as a Christian. People aren't in hotel rooms to read Bibles. Even if they are in a vulnerable frame of mind, it takes a magical belief in the power of the Bible to imagine that someone is going to randomly peruse this big thick holy book and find a zinger straight to their exact need.
I don't normally use or rummage through drawers in hotel rooms. The Bible, when it's there, seems to be tucked away in a dresser drawer whereas the amenities book and order-in menus and WiFi instructions and such that I really care about tend to be in the desk.
I hear its an increasing trend for the Quaran and maybe the Book of Mormon to get equal time, and for both the Bible and the others to be out in the reading library for those who want them, as some have complained of them being in the rooms.
I was in the Fairfield Inn in September, and they had a bible and book of mormon in the left-hand night stand drawer...
I'm sure that originally it was because of the Christian dominance in this country. Christian evangelicals pushed it, hotel owners embraced it because maybe they though it would bring them more business, and travelers like it because they appreciated being able to travel without lugging around their family bibles.
One thing I wonder about. What is the theft rate for in room bibles?
I just took a Gideon Bible. It was organized so well, and I loved reading it. Thank you for the reminder, I need to send them $20 today. Or maybe $40 so they can buy two bibles to put there. We stay at this Super 8 alot, due to handling my Uncles Estate. And out of 10 motel rooms, sadly, only one had a bible.
I am sure it is analogous to passing out tracks as a way to share the Lord, hey if only 1 person out of 100 who comes to the Lord through reading the Gideon, it is well worth it.

there is an old story about a traveling salesman that goes into a hotel room at lake tahoe and checks to make sure he has a tv and a telephone for entertainment and business calls. He then pulls out the drawer next to his bed and sees the gideon bible and a list of charges for phone calls.
Calling another state: $20 plus telephone company costs.
Calling another country: $50 plus telephone company costs.
Calling washington d.c.: $100 plus telephone company costs
calling heaven: Free.
He dials the front desk. "i don't get it. You have a phone that dials to heaven?"
"yes," replies the clerk.
"why is it free to call heaven," the salesman asks?
it doesn't work on catholic priests, so i doubt it.
lol!!
