Avalokiteshvara/Chenrezig
In the words of Tarthang Tulku (broken link), "Compassion accepts others as they are. One who thoroughly realizes compassion no longer sees any separation between self and others. Compassion is the wholesome and spontaneous response to all situations."

I think I can answer this one. I studied a bit on meditation for a few years, though I never did really get disciplined about it. The answer, or my answer, anyway, is that it's highly doubtful that at any one time, the majority segment of any population is at a spiritual level to want to attempt "hours and hours each day". Everyone is at a different spiritual point in a society, just like everyone is a different age, does a different job or has different likes and dislikes.
I do believe that certain people will be born ready to begin huge undertakings like "meditating (or praying) for hours each day", but not everyone. Which is all good, IMO. It's the way things are supposed to work. And it's all good to be one of the people who does want to become a Buddhist monk or anyone else not actively "in society" full-time or part-time.
I also think that the people who do choose to become monks are not necessarily "higher up" (karmically) or anything. In fact, it's possible that for some monks, as for some early Christian monks (who literally lived away from/outside of society), are at a *lower* spiritual level and that's why they *have to* spend so much time in the practice. Every situation and motives are different even *within* a segment, as far as I understand things.
Hope that makes sense.
