To me it just shows how much value God puts on human life as compared to his own ego.
But I believe life is a gift.

I think this is a gross oversimplification of the story, Ringwielder. On the surface you could frame it that way. But we are not privy to God's motivations for allowing the Job scenario. At the end of the book, neither is Job. Personally, I don't think God would have allowed all that to transpire in Job's life if He didn't feel their was some sort of redemptive purpose in it.

Bottom line is that there is such vastness separating our understanding and that of almighty God, I think it renders our "explanation attempts" rather futile. And I think that is what God was saying to Job in the concluding chapters.

I agree, people aren't replacable. I don't see how putting Job through all that and then giving him all new things is a happy ending.

The book of Job doesn't even tell you what the ending was. It only talks about what happened to Job on earth.

Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil?” So Satan answered the LORD and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing? Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. But now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your face!” And the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand on his person.
So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.

Job 1:8-12

Hi Kay. I think all the motivation that was needed can be found in the words above. If we did not have this in the story, it might not have seemed as ridiculous.

Which is yet another validation of why I believe the Bible. It sure would have been seemingly beneficial to cut this from the text long ago, yet, it's still there.

And us 'poor saps' still buy it.

Yep, I do, hook, line, and sinker!

Yes, that's part of the story of how everything came down. That still doesn't mean that God revealed all of His motivation/plans here. In other words, I think God had a "hidden agenda" here.
