Ridiculous, everyone knows cats have only 6.4 lives.
Why should there be a discussion when the issue may be settled with a field test? Get a cat, kill it, and see if it reanimates itself, kill it again if it does...and continue until after one of the deaths, there is no more reanimation.
If we get up a betting pool on it, I'll take...one life.
Although cats have only one life they are extremely resilient creatures that survive accidents that would kill most other animals, That is probably what gave rise to the belief they had multiple lives.
It is a very old myth and dates back to at least Ancient Egypt.
I am not certain as to why the number 9 was chosen, but suspect it has some relationship to numerology.

We had a cat that was proof of that. He was born feral and we'd tamed him just enough he hung around to eat and sleep. Then he'd prowl. We'd look out and see him up on someone's roof.
On the morning of the Northridge earthquake, which was a heck of a shaker, he didn't show up for breakfast. We called and called for him. Nothing. There was a lot of damage in our area and I was really worried he'd been hurt or trapped somewhere. We spent the day cleaning up damage and calling his name.
Finally, about 12 hours after the quake hit.... he showed up. Covered in soot and barely recognizable. We found out later a neighbor had heard howling coming from his fireplace. He opened up the flu..... and our cat dropped dropped down... along with part of the chimney. He stopped going up onto roofs after that.

At that rate by the time you reach my age you will have to be at least 4 cats.
Oh, maybe 1 1/2. You're not THAT much older than me.
Plus, I've cut down quite considerably on my death-defying antics.
Only went off the road into a 4' ditch once this winter!
(Thank Godfrey Daniel the 4' ditch had 3 1/2' of snow. Like flying off the road into a giant pillow.)
